Chapter 45 Let Him Come!
The sudden emergency braking caused Yu Dachang's body to lurch violently forward, his head slamming into the front seat before bouncing back.
Though uninjured, his head still rang with a dull buzz, and golden stars danced before his eyes.
"You guys..." Yu Dachang shook his head hard.
"Did you do that on purpose?"
He had guarded against open attacks from enemies, but failed to anticipate a friendly fire from his own people.
Yu Dachang felt somewhat depressed.
What on earth did he say to warrant such an overreaction from them?
"No, say what you just said one more time," the two in the front seat said almost in unison.
"You guys did that on purpose!" Yu Dachang retorted irritably.
"Not that sentence," the team member in the passenger seat corrected.
"The one before that!"
His head was still a bit dizzy from the impact. Yu Dachang shook it once more before slowly replying,
"All the prime suspects have been apprehended."
Following this statement, the two men in the front seat froze as if struck by a paralysis spell, maintaining their twisted-around postures.
They stared at the big, fat man in the back seat with the look one might reserve for an extraterrestrial creature.
They definitely hadn't misheard this time!
Good grief, the real culprits had actually been caught.
Before leaving, this chubby fellow had discovered that the rented apartment was not the primary crime scene and had managed to unearth several new clues.
In their eyes, that already counted as astonishingly rapid progress in the case.
They had even supposed that the fat man just possessed good luck, stumbling upon new leads by sheer coincidence.
Yet how was one to explain this current situation?
They had barely been out for a few days, and the guy was practically ready to wrap up the case.
By comparison, what they had done over the past few days genuinely felt like going on a leisure trip.
As they walked upstairs, the two felt as though their feet were treading on cotton—soft, spongy, and drifting.
A sense of unreality filled them with a vague anxiety,
fearing that upon meeting the rest of the special investigation team shortly, they would be told the fat man was merely pulling their leg.
Upon reaching the upper floor, the two skipped washing their faces or eating, heading straight for the room adjacent to the interrogation chamber.
When they saw Lü Zhongxin conducting an interrogation on the computer monitor, the two finally confirmed that everything Yu Dachang had said was true.
Had cases become this effortless to solve nowadays?
This chubby guy appeared to have just graduated from the police academy, whereas all of them were seasoned veteran criminal investigators with a wealth of experience.
Police academies nowadays really do produce extraordinary talent!
On this day, all members of the special investigation team, including Yu Dachang, skipped going home.
The case had entered its final interrogation phase; as long as the suspects confessed and provided accounts, it would be a perfect conclusion.
Naturally, the confessed modus operandi also had to corroborate the existing evidence.
Yet reality stubbornly ran counter to expectations.
Both newly arrived suspects kept their mouths tightly shut. No matter how Lü Zhongxin pressed, the two simply refused to speak.
It seemed they had coordinated this in advance... Yu Dachang sat before the computer, gazing at the young man seated in the interrogation chair on the surveillance screen.
He was a young man who looked almost excessively youthful.
Did that description feel inappropriate to you?
That was only because you had never encountered someone with such an exceptionally youthful countenance.
In terms of features, he was plain and ordinary, yet the combination of his facial characteristics gave the impression that he had barely reached adulthood.
He possessed a tall frame, fair skin, bright and clear dark eyes, tightly pursed lips, and an expression that remained resolute and calm.
Even while cankered to the interrogation chair, the innate aura he carried was impossible to ignore.
What else are you trying to pull? Yu Dachang always felt the person in the interrogation chair was still scheming something.
Did he still have a backup plan?
Since they had managed to corner him, he should have known his cover was blown.
Resisting any further at this juncture was entirely meaningless.
Even remaining silent didn't matter; obtaining convictions based on zero confessions wasn't exactly a novel occurrence these days.
With ironclad evidence piled like a mountain, he refused to believe the fellow could still stir up any waves... At this thought, Yu Dachang spat toward the suspect on the screen:
"Pfui~, you think you're worthy!"
"Hey, hey, hey~~~, what are you doing? Have you lost your mind?" The team members who were also watching the surveillance monitor immediately stepped in to stop him.
How disgusting.
If you aren't going to watch, at least let us watch~
Spitting on public property's computer—had you gone completely mental?
Several people scrambled to pull Yu Dachang up from the computer chair.
Why did it take so many people to pull him up?
Because one person couldn't budge him; he filled every inch of the office chair.
"If you're tired, go home and rest."
"Yeah, exactly," other team members echoed in agreement.
"If going home is too much trouble, the detachment headquarters has a lounge. Go lie down."
"Are you hungry? Just say whatever you want to eat, and I'll go buy it for you."
They all assumed the chubby fellow was suffering from psychological strain due to excessive pressure.
And it was no wonder he felt that way; if they had been tasked with leading the investigation, they wouldn't have achieved this level of success even if they had gone mad.
Right now, their demands of Yu Dachang were simple...
If you're tired, go sleep; if you're hungry, eat. None of us have any objections, as long as you don't lose your mind.
Should the case take any further twists and turns later on, they wouldn't know how to handle it.
Even now, they still couldn't figure out how Yu Dachang had managed to capture all the suspects in one fell swoop.
Catching one would still fall within their cognitive framework.
But capturing both the principal culprit and the accomplice simultaneously exceeded their comprehension.
Even the two team members who had personally seized the true culprit had assumed there was only a single murderer.
Only upon returning to the detachment headquarters did they learn there was an accomplice, and that Lü Zhongxin had neutralized that accomplice at the very moment they were nabbing the main suspect.
Yet the mastermind directing all of this was the immensely plump fellow right before them.
That oversized brain of his truly hadn't grown in vain; his cranial capacity was simply massive.
Analyzing the case, formulating hypotheses, verifying authenticity, and simultaneously directing the operations of the entire team—
what kind of logical thinking capability did that require? It was simply unimaginable.
Those who listen to advice get to eat their fill... Yu Dachang actually went off to sleep.
It wasn't quite overexertion of the brain, but he was indeed exhausted.
On the second day following the suspects' capture, interrogations proceeded as usual.
This time, Lü Zhongxin altered his routine approach, no longer merely asking questions, but presenting corresponding evidence at every crucial turning point.
Faced with ironclad proof, Zhou Hongfu was the first to crack.
He admitted that he had indeed been present at the crime scene and had assisted the principal offender in transporting the corpse.
And that principal offender was none other than his own son.
Zhou Zizhe, twenty-one years old, a sophomore at the Songhai Police Academy with exceptional grades...
In Zhou Hongfu's confession, his son was his pride, and he would do anything for him.
Yet he remained entirely ignorant of Zhou Zizhe's motive and the full sequence of events surrounding the case.
No matter how Lü Zhongxin questioned him, Zhou Hongfu claimed absolute ignorance across the board.
When Kong Lingjie was brought up, he shook his head in outright denial, claiming he had never heard of such a person.
He had spoken, yet it felt as though he had said nothing at all~
Lü Zhongxin had no choice but to turn back and interrogate the main suspect.
The young man named Zhou Zizhe wore a look of disdain upon hearing that Zhou Hongfu had already begun confessing.
And it was precisely this expression that made Lü Zhongxin feel a sense of familiarity.
Only when one held absolute control over the overall situation and possessed total self-confidence would such an expression surface.
It felt as though...
That chubby disciple of his often wore that exact look.
He vaguely remembered that he, too, had graduated from the Songhai Police Academy.
Come to think of it, the two of them were fellow disciples from the same academy.
Did this count as cannibalism among schoolmates?
Just as Lü Zhongxin felt a tinge of absurdity, Zhou Zizhe—who had remained mute ever since his capture—suddenly raised his head and looked straight at him:
"Him? Why isn't it him?"
"What?" Lü Zhongxin was left stunned by the question.
"Ha, Officer, swap someone else in," Zhou Zizhe laughed contemptuously.
"You aren't qualified to interrogate me. The two of us are entirely on different frequencies. Bring in the person who can answer this question."
"Bring in the one who saw through all my plans!"
"Only he is qualified."
"Anyone else won't do!"
