“I’ll ask around later.” Lu Feng ladled the hot water from the pot and carried it out to the courtyard. Fu Xiaoxiao nodded and went straight back to her room.
After preparing the hot water, Lu Feng bathed the two children. Seeing there was still plenty of water left in the bucket, he decided to strip down and wash himself as well.
Fu Xiaoxiao stepped out of her room and caught sight of the handsome man bathing.
The evening sunlight draped over him like a golden veil, soft and gentle. His bronzed skin and firm chest rose and fell subtly with each breath. Sparkling droplets danced across his broad back, tracing the hollow of his spine as they slid downward. His hair, soaked by the water, clung strand by strand to the sides of his face.
Lu Feng tilted his head slightly upward, closed his eyes, and raised the ladle high in his hand, letting the water cascade down his forehead, cheeks, and chin. His hands swept back from his forehead, tossing his wet black hair behind him, emphasizing the sharp and rugged contours of his face.
Fu Xiaoxiao leaned against the doorframe, admiring the captivating scene. She couldn’t help but whistle playfully.
Lu Feng was momentarily stunned, then turned to look at the owner of the whistle. Fu Xiaoxiao smiled gently.
“Sorry, I was just about to make dinner. Didn’t mean to interrupt your bath. Please, carry on and ignore me.”
With that, Fu Xiaoxiao spread her fingers to shield her face and walked past him into the kitchen.
“...” For the first time in his life, Lu Feng was utterly speechless. Had he just been teased by her?
Fu Xiaoxiao poked her head out of the kitchen again. Lu Feng paused, sensing her gaze sweeping over his chest. Silently, he grabbed a towel to cover himself.
“Just asking, there are no vegetables in the kitchen. Where can I get some?” Fu Xiaoxiao asked, a hint of regret flickering in her eyes as she saw him block the view.
“There’s a small vegetable patch behind the house. I planted a few things.” Lu Feng glanced at her and pointed behind.
“Good.” Fu Xiaoxiao stepped outside and made her way to the back, where neat rows of vegetable plots stretched out. Each household had cultivated their own little garden behind their homes.
She picked some vegetables and scallions. Lu Feng, having finished his bath and dressed, was folding clothes for himself and the two children.
Fu Xiaoxiao returned to the kitchen with the vegetables. Seeing some flour and a few eggs, she decided to chop the vegetables finely and make egg vegetable pancakes.
In a bowl, she cracked the eggs, added flour and an appropriate amount of water, stirring into a batter. She folded in the chopped vegetables and mixed well. The fire on the stove still burned gently, perfect for warming the pan.
Once the iron pan was hot, Fu Xiaoxiao poured a little oil, scooped a ladle of batter into the pan, and used a spatula to spread it evenly. When the pancake’s underside solidified and gave off a faint aroma of crispness, she flipped it over immediately.
After the other side set, a fragrant, golden egg vegetable pancake was ready.
Thinking of Lu Feng, a soldier with a hearty appetite, Fu Xiaoxiao decided to make several more.

Inside the room, Lu Feng sat before Lu Lin and Lu Chen. The two children clutched their clothes nervously. The atmosphere among the father and sons was tense and silent.
Lu Feng sighed inwardly. This was his first time being a father, and he had no idea how to communicate with them. Though the two children depended on him, they said nothing.
Whenever he asked, they only nodded in agreement.
Remembering Fu Xiaoxiao’s words, Lu Feng cleared his throat. The children stiffened. “Lin, Chen, what did you eat for lunch today?”
Expecting a scolding, the boys were surprised to hear Lu Feng simply asking about their meal. Lu Lin looked up at him.
“Dad Lu, I used a slingshot to get some wild fruits. I had two wild fruits for lunch.”
Hearing that the children only ate wild fruits, Lu Feng frowned. “Didn’t Aunt Li make you any food?”
The boys exchanged glances and shook their heads. “She never really cares about us.”
Lu Feng pressed his lips tightly, holding back his anger. He had given Aunt Li plenty of money, yet the children said they had never eaten her cooking?
“How long has this been going on?” Lu Feng took a deep breath, his eyes burning with a fierce fire. His deep, bright gaze now looked as dark and chilling as ink.
“Since the last time you went on a mission,” Lu Lin answered after thinking.
“That won’t happen again. She’s different from Aunt Li. She’ll take good care of you from now on. Don’t forage for wild fruits outside anymore.” Lu Feng ruffled their hair seriously.
“Okay.” The boys looked at each other, their eyes dimming.
They didn’t doubt Lu Feng’s words, but the other women said...
Suddenly, a delicious aroma wafted in, making their stomachs rumble uncontrollably.
Lu Feng glanced toward the kitchen, where the scent came from.
“Dinner’s ready!” Fu Xiaoxiao called from the kitchen.
“Coming!” Lu Feng motioned to the boys to follow him. He moved a table to the courtyard, and Lu Lin and Lu Chen brought out their small stools with practiced ease.
Fu Xiaoxiao squatted down, carrying a plate full of pancakes. Three pairs of eyes eagerly watched her.

“You must be hungry. These are egg vegetable pancakes. Try them and see if you like them,” Fu Xiaoxiao said with a smile as she set the plate down.
The golden, radiant pancakes instantly became the visual focus.
With just the right hint of crispness, the fluffy, soft pancake body perfectly blended egg and flour.
Bringing it close to the nose, the rich, mellow aroma of egg greeted the senses first, mingling with the fresh scent of vegetables, a faint wheaty fragrance, and the subtle oiliness from frying, creating a unique and enticing aroma.
“Smells delicious.” Lu Feng could tell from the aroma alone that the taste would be good. He picked up a piece and took a bite eagerly, and it was just as he had expected.
The soft filling slowly melted on his tongue. The smoothness of the egg and the softness of the flour complemented each other, while the vegetables contributed their fresh sweetness and crispness, creating a rich texture that danced in his mouth.
“Delicious!” Seeing Lu Feng start eating, Lu Lin and Lu Chen immediately grabbed their own pieces and took bites.
Their mouths full of egg vegetable pancakes, they exclaimed how tasty they were.
Fu Xiaoxiao smiled happily at their enjoyment. She loved cooking and even more so loved hearing genuine praise from those who tasted her food.
It was the greatest compliment a cook could receive.
In her past life, she never had a family until her death. Unexpectedly, after crossing over to this world, she suddenly had a husband and children—a perfect start from zero.
“Eat more! I know soldiers have big appetites, so I made extra,” Fu Xiaoxiao said with a smile. “The only thing missing is seasoning. If I added a little pepper, it would taste even better.”
“When I come back, I’ll take you to buy some!” Lu Feng said between bites.
If it already tasted this good without it, how amazing would it be with pepper?
“Okay,” Fu Xiaoxiao replied with a smile.
Indeed, more ingredients were needed.
During this meal, Lu Lin and Lu Chen ate without raising their heads, but they were still small. Eventually, when they were too full to continue, they gave up, watching Lu Feng finish all the egg vegetable pancakes.
