Chapter 18: All Future Meals Are Covered
[So hungry, so hungry, I’m starving, please give me some food.]
[My little one actually sang it out loud.]
[On a diet, I painfully soaked a pack of instant noodles—those four kids are just eating so heartily.]
[I’ve already ordered takeout. I couldn’t control myself when I saw the four little darlings eating so well; my hand just clicked the order.]
[I have to say, the four little ones not only eat well but don’t spill food everywhere or waste it—that speaks volumes about their upbringing.]
[Another day wishing for a different daughter. Mine has never been well-behaved at mealtime; I have to chase her and coax her to eat, and she makes a mess all over—it’s really frustrating.]
[Just like my son, who also never ate properly as a child, but he ate a lot.]
[Could it be they’re eating too many snacks?]
[Not really eating snacks; it’s just that their appetites aren’t great. They look a bit shorter and leaner than kids their age.]
Yu Danxue’s four children were eating when the housekeeper brought over some freshly made cucumber salad and tomato scrambled eggs.
“Here, taste the dishes you made yourselves. I made some fresh ones,” the housekeeper said with a cheerful smile as she sat down.
The four children hesitated at the sight of the differently colored cucumber salad and were reluctant to pick up chopsticks.
In the end, Yu Danxue, as the elder, bravely picked up a piece of cucumber and took a bite.
“Anning, how does it taste?” Luo Jian asked nervously, “If it’s bad, just spit it out.”
Yu Danxue took a spoonful of rice and swallowed the cucumber. “Well, it’s a bit sour and sweet with some other flavors. Not bad.”
The housekeeper smiled quietly; she had washed the cucumbers twice before preparing the salad.
Upon hearing this, Luo Jian’s three children also tried the cucumber salad.
“It’s edible, but the taste isn’t great.”
“There’s too much seasoning. Anning, you shouldn’t put so much seasoning in cucumber salad.”
Yu Danxue realized cucumber salad shouldn’t have too much sauce and understood that Xiao Sheng didn’t know this either.
Next time, she decided not to listen to Xiao Sheng.
“Let’s finish the cucumber salad and tomato eggs—no wasting food.”
Luo Jian’s three children agreed and focused on the tomato eggs and cucumber salad.
Thanks to the efforts of the four children, the cucumber salad and tomato scrambled eggs were completely eaten, with very little left on the table.
“Oh, such good kids!” the housekeeper beamed with joy. “My two kids usually don’t like to eat, but today they ate two bowls each.”
“You can all come to my house for meals while shooting the program. I’ll cook meat for you—I promise you won’t go hungry.”
Yu Danxue’s four children politely thanked her. “Thank you, Grandma.”
---
“Grandma, we can’t keep coming to your house; you work hard to earn money too,” Yu Danxue said.
The housekeeper patted her head, chuckling, “You four don’t eat much; I’ve got plenty for that.”
“The important thing is that you’re encouraging my two kids to eat more—that’s good for their health.”
These children were so polite and straightforward, utterly endearing.
Yu Danxue said, “Grandma, that’s not right.”
“We’re just freeloading…”
“You help me out, though,” the housekeeper said fondly, “How about you take my two kids out to play, alright?”
“They usually just play with their phones at home; they don’t like going out.”
“Too much screen time harms the eyes. Kids should get outside and play more.”
Yu Danxue asked, “Grandma, do you need us to do anything else?”
The housekeeper waved her hand, “No, no, there’s nothing else to do at home. Just go have fun.”
Yu Danxue agreed and took her friends along with the housekeeper’s two grandchildren to play around the village.
Xiao Ping and Xiao An also had their own friends and brought them along.
Soon, the six children grew into a crowd of over a dozen, bustling and lively.
The cameraman filmed this and that, focusing mainly on Yu Danxue’s group.
“Where shall we play?” Xiao Ping raised his hand, beaming, “How about playing ‘Eagle Catches the Chicks’?”
Yu Danxue said, “We need to deliver the food first. After that, we can play, okay?”
Xiao Ping agreed.
So the group of children carried several dishes to Yu Zhisheng and Qi Kang.
“Xiao Sheng, Xiao Qi, we’ve already eaten. You two eat quickly,” Yu Danxue said with the care of an elder watching over juniors.
“We’ll figure out something for dinner. For lunch, just make do.”
Originally, Yu Zhisheng and Qi Kang had planned to just put together a simple meal, so this unexpected hospitality was greatly appreciated.
They gratefully said, “Thank you, little aunt.”
A tender smile appeared on Yu Danxue’s face. “What about the other two guests?”
Hungry Yu Zhisheng and Qi Kang had already picked up their bowls and were eating heartily.
“I don’t know, they’re still in their room,” Yu Zhisheng mumbled through his mouthfuls, “Little aunt, don’t bother with them—they might even say you’re meddling.”
Those two were so unpleasant; he didn’t want to see them at all.
---
Yu Danxue sighed softly and took the group to find Duan Lele and Gao Pengfei, planning to get them some food too.
But—
As soon as Gao Pengfei saw Yu Danxue, his expression soured. “I’m not eating!”
Before she could respond, he slammed the door shut with a bang.
[What kind of person is that? Such poor manners.]
[Exactly! The little aunt was so kind to invite him, and this is how he responds.]
[It’s clearly Yu Danxue’s fault. That kid is always snide toward our Teacher Gao. Does she think just because she’s Yu Zhisheng’s little aunt she can do whatever she wants?]
[Oh, who’s this loser? Oh, a Gao Pengfei fan. So many fans have abandoned him, and you still stubbornly support him.]
Gao Pengfei’s die-hard fans immediately started arguing with the audience, only to be overwhelmed and silenced.
Yu Danxue had no idea about any of this. She frowned slightly and led her friends to Duan Lele’s place, but the door remained shut; he was pretending not to exist.
“Anning, forget it,” Luo Jian wrinkled his nose and snorted, “Some people are just like that; let’s not bother with them.”
Xiao Yun and Feng Doudou looked uneasy.
Yu Danxue noticed but didn’t ask anything on camera. Instead, she said, “Alright, let’s go play.”
“Where shall we go?”
When it came to play, the village children had plenty of ideas.
“Let’s go to the river. We can catch fish and shrimp and swim. Swimming in this weather is so nice.”
“Let’s go to the mountain. There’s lots to see, and we can run around.”
“Let’s play hide-and-seek.”
“I want to play ‘Eagle Catches the Chicks.’”
Just as Yu Danxue was about to speak, the director’s voice came through.
“Now releasing the second task: Guests are to help one household harvest the crops in their field. No villagers may be asked for assistance.”
