Chapter 24: Recovery Rate
Bo Xingjue’s voice was rich and magnetic as he said, unhurriedly, "It’s fine. I’ve finished my shift. I am staying here purely for personal matters."
"My sister has been trying to invite you to meet, but you’ve turned her down every time. She feels she can’t properly express her gratitude, and it’s been weighing on her—she can’t eat or sleep well. She feels so guilty that she’s been on the verge of depression these past two days."
Yan Ningxi did not doubt his words, as Bo Shuangyun had indeed been trying to reach her constantly. "I have been genuinely busy these past few days. As I said before, I truly didn't have the time; I wasn't deliberately rejecting her."
"I see. Hearing that from you should make her feel a bit better, though she surely won't be able to let it go entirely," Bo Xingjue replied.
Yan Ningxi felt a bit troubled. What should she do? If she had to, perhaps she could clear her schedule during lunch tomorrow to meet with Bo Shuangyun.
Seeing that Yan Ningxi’s resolve was softening, Bo Xingjue’s lips curled into a faint smile. He suddenly turned serious. "My sister is quite superstitious. She firmly believes that if this debt of gratitude isn't repaid in time, something else might happen to her daughter—my niece, Lin'er."
Yan Ningxi froze. "So, what are you implying?" She had heard of such beliefs before.
Bo Xingjue voiced his sister’s original intention: "My sister wanted to give you five million directly as a token of gratitude."
"Absolutely not." Yan Ningxi refused without a second thought. Although she had saved Lin'er, she had already received a system reward. "It was truly just a small favor. Besides, Officer Zhao told me that he helped me apply for a 'Courageous Act' bonus of fifty thousand yuan."
Bo Xingjue continued his persuasion. "But your younger brother has leukemia—isn't money what you need most right now? You could easily accept it."
Yan Ningxi replied, "I’ve already found a way to raise the funds. Money is no longer an issue."
Although Bo Xingjue was curious about her confidence, he didn't press the matter since she was unwilling. "Then, how about this? Our family knows a specialist in treating leukemia. During your brother’s hospitalization, we could arrange for him to provide treatment guidance at the First Hospital and even perform the surgery himself."
Offering help when things are already going well is meaningless; true sincerity lies in providing aid when it is most needed. Yan Ningxi’s eyes lit up. "What is the specialist's name?"
"Yang Juhe."
Yan Ningxi was visibly excited. "Professor Yang Juhe? I’ve heard that his patients with leukemia have a one-hundred-percent recovery rate."
Many families of leukemia patients sought his care, but he was far too busy. Even if one managed to reach him, there was a long waiting list. She had searched online previously and found that his schedule was booked a year in advance. A year from now, her mother would have already given birth, and it would be too late, so she had given up.
Bo Xingjue said, "Indeed. It seems you’ve done your research."
Yan Ningxi looked worried. "But isn't he extremely busy? If I try to reach him now, I don't even know how long I'd have to wait."
Bo Xingjue spoke with confidence. "I wouldn't have brought it up if he couldn't make it. Our family has helped him quite a bit. If we ask, he will come, even if it means sacrificing his rest time. Furthermore, I’ve already spoken to him. He mentioned that even with scheduled appointments, many patients unfortunately pass away before their turn, creating slots, so he has agreed."
"That's true; not every patient can wait until their surgery date." Hearing this, Yan Ningxi, who had been quite drowsy, became instantly alert. "Wait, he actually agreed?"
Bo Xingjue watched her, her expression reminiscent of a startled rabbit, and nodded with a smile. "Yes, he agreed. He has a lecture at Nancheng Medical University this Friday, so he can head to the hospital on Saturday."
Speaking of the hospital, he glanced around the ward. "Actually, a private hospital would offer much better conditions. You should move your brother there. This hospital is owned by my family, and the specialists in every department are among the best in the country. You wouldn't have to worry about medical expenses anymore."
"This..." Yan Ningxi asked earnestly, "Can Professor Yang only treat patients at that hospital?"
"Not at all," Bo Xingjue replied. "Given his authority, any hospital would be more than happy to have him."
Yan Ningxi felt relieved. "Nancheng First Hospital is also top-tier in the country. While public hospitals may lack the hardware of private ones, hospitalization isn't meant to be a luxury, and my family is already accustomed to it." If she were to move him, it would be too much of a burden on Bo Shuangyun, and she would owe even more favors she wouldn't know how to repay.
Bo Xingjue knew she would refuse. "Very well, I won't force you. By the way, your brother must be in high school, right? How will he manage his studies during treatment?"
This was another matter that weighed heavily on Yan Ningxi. While Yan Qingyu could not control his illness, falling behind in his studies would have a profound impact on his future. After his diagnosis, their parents had asked him to take a leave of absence.
However, he refused, fearing that if he took a year or two off, he would be older than his classmates and struggle to integrate. Now, whenever his health allowed, he spent his time reading and studying. During the final exams last semester, he took them from his hospital bed and ranked seventh in the entire grade.
His teachers found him exceptionally bright and suggested he continue his studies, taking exams as they came without repeating a grade. The school even agreed to provide a fast track, and starting in the second year of high school, they would send him exam papers and study materials regularly. But they emphasized that his health came first.
"My grades were decent in the past, and Qingyu's condition has stabilized recently. He attends online classes during the day, and at night, I can help him with anything he doesn't understand. That should keep him from falling too far behind."
Bo Xingjue made another suggestion. "The family my sister married into is surnamed Qin. Her brother-in-law, her husband’s younger brother, just got accepted into Huaxia University this year. Since it’s summer break, he could tutor your brother until the semester starts."
Yan Ningxi’s mouth twitched. "Don't tell me he has already agreed to this too?"
Bo Xingjue laughed. "He has."
Yan Ningxi sighed softly, frowning. "I feel this is becoming too much trouble."
Bo Xingjue said, "It’s no trouble at all. He knew you saved his niece and offered it himself. Since you won't accept money, this is the only way we can repay you."
Given that the tutor was a prospective student at Huaxia University—the best in the country—Yan Ningxi found she couldn't refuse. "Alright, thank you all very much."
Bo Xingjue replied, "You're very welcome. I’ll go call them now and tell them you’ve accepted."
