Chapter 6: Someone Wants to Kill
“Alright.”
On the way, Yan Ning casually asked, “Auntie, it’s the weekend today. Where are you planning to go for fun?”
Cao Xiangping was quite easygoing and didn’t treat her like an outsider at all, openly sharing her family matters. “Fun? Don’t be fooled by how relaxed I look as a landlord—every family has its own difficult troubles…”
Her husband had passed away early, leaving behind two daughters who were both married and living with their husbands’ families.
She also had an older brother, who had a son.
Her brother believed that since she only had daughters, the property rightfully belonged to him. The family assets should be inherited by the Cao family line.
When Cao Xiangping was younger, she had started several businesses and made some money. Before the city’s housing prices skyrocketed and purchase restrictions were imposed, she gradually bought six properties.
Though she no longer ran businesses, the rental income allowed her to live comfortably.
Her brother, now in his fifties, owned only a small, old apartment.
His son was about to remarry, and the bride’s family insisted that the groom have an elevator-equipped apartment in the city to proceed with the marriage.
Of course, her brother couldn’t afford that, so he turned his attention to Cao Xiangping.
Not only did he demand that she transfer one of her properties to his son, but he also insisted on the spacious three-hundred-square-meter apartment in the city center where she currently lived.
He shamelessly argued that since she had only two daughters, the family’s assets could not be given to outsiders.
He insisted that the transfer must happen now or later, it was non-negotiable.
Cao Xiangping naturally refused, firmly stating that her properties belonged to her daughters.
However, her brother and nephew were persistent. They came knocking every day, and if they couldn’t find her, they would call and plead, causing her much distress.
At first, their tone was polite, but when she continued to refuse, they resorted to threats.
Thinking of her disappointing nephew, Cao Xiangping sighed, “Last night, my nephew Cao Changsheng said he wanted to see me today. He even said if I didn’t go, he would look for my daughters. I’m worried he might do something foolish and harm them, so I agreed.”
Yan Ning looked curious. “Did you arrange where to meet?”
“Just at the bus stop outside the community gate,” Cao Xiangping replied. “He told me to wait there; he would drive to pick me up and take me to a café so we could talk.”
The bus stop?
Watching the vehicles speeding by, Yan Ning suspected her uncle’s son might have sinister intentions.
[Congratulations, host, you guessed right.]
Yan Ning quickly took out her phone and started composing a message to the police.
Yesterday, Zhao Quan had given her his contact information.
She hoped Officer Zhao would trust her immediately.
“Officer Zhao, I’m in trouble. Someone is trying to kill. The location is the bus stop at the west gate of the Magnolia Heights community.”
After sending, Yan Ning’s expression remained calm. “Auntie, I happen to need the bus too. Let’s wait together.”
Cao Xiangping was in good spirits and smiled, nodding. “Alright, I’ll follow your lead.”
Officer Zhao was discussing a case with colleagues when he received a WeChat alert. Glancing at it, his face suddenly changed.
“There’s a case. The location is the bus stop at the west gate of Magnolia Heights.”
All the officers grew serious. To dare to commit murder in a public place like a bus stop, they must be brazen indeed.
At the bus stop—
“Xiao Yan, I didn’t realize you just graduated from university this year. You look like a young girl who hasn’t even reached adulthood.”
“Auntie Cao, you’re flattering me. I’m already twenty-two.”
…
Yan Ning and Cao Xiangping chatted at the bus stop when suddenly, a hand shot out from the shadows and forcefully pushed Cao Xiangping toward the traffic.
Her body instantly lost balance, about to fall.
At the same time, a black SUV was speeding toward her.
The driver, Li Ming, saw someone about to fall onto the road and panicked, slamming on the brakes.
But the distance was too close; even with the brakes, the car couldn’t stop in time.
“Oh no, oh no.”
He’d just bought the new car and hadn’t even registered it yet, and now it was about to cause a fatal accident.
He was incredibly unlucky…
Cao Xiangping, already off balance, saw the vehicle rushing toward her and knew she couldn’t dodge it. Despair washed over her face.
She had never imagined that today would be the day she’d die—and by being hit by a car.
Others at the bus stop were horrified, their faces pale.
Soon, the SUV screeched to a halt just past the bus stop.
Yan Ning did not take her eyes off Cao Xiangping. Seeing the danger, she acted swiftly and grabbed her hand, pulling her back to safety.
However, she had used her right hand, which had a fresh wound sutured just yesterday. Suddenly, the wound reopened, and bright red blood quickly soaked her sleeve.
Still, she felt no pain—only the sticky wetness of blood staining her clothes.
Yan Ning sighed silently. She had hoped the wound wouldn’t bleed, and she was wearing a blue gauze garment this morning.
Now that it was stained, she’d have to change clothes again.
Li Ming was ecstatic, sitting in the car and turning his head to look out the window at Yan Ning as if she were a deity.
He truly hadn’t expected that when his car nearly struck Cao Xiangping, she’d be saved by this young woman.
Cao Xiangping trembled after the incident. Though saved, her face was ashen, and she nervously touched her chest, looking gratefully at Yan Ning.
“Xiao Yan, thank you so much. If it weren’t for you, I might not be here now.”
Her eyes then fell on Yan Ning’s bloodied right sleeve, exclaiming, “You’re hurt? That’s a lot of blood.”
“It’s nothing. I got this injury yesterday. Now’s not the time to talk about it,” Yan Ning said, already preparing to chase after the attacker.
The assailant hadn’t fled immediately after pushing Cao Xiangping but had lurked nearby, as if wanting to witness her death firsthand.
When they saw Cao Xiangping was saved, they panicked and tried to run.
But Yan Ning hadn’t even started running before several plainclothes men advanced and quickly subdued the man.
Yan Ning breathed a sigh of relief. Officer Zhao must have believed her message.
Trained police officers had arrived just in time.
The screeching brakes had drawn the attention of many passersby, who now gathered around.
Li Ming quickly got out of the car, intending to check on Cao Xiangping.
But seeing no one paid him any mind and everyone was running in one direction, he dared not leave. Fearful of being accused of a hit-and-run, he followed to observe.
The restrained man struggled violently but to no avail.
After a long fight, he failed to free himself and was covered in injuries. With a fierce expression, he shouted, “Let me go! Who are you to detain me? Help! Murder! Help, someone’s killing!”
