Chapter 16: They Must Be Worried About Me
Not long after Jiang Muyu left the police station, she sensed a burning gaze upon her. She turned around and spotted Ren Qiming sitting in a nearby car. Waving her hand, she greeted him. The next moment, he grew even angrier, as if flames were about to burst from his head. Jiang Muyu curled her lips and boarded the bus. There was no choice; without money, she had to be frugal.
Upon arriving at the Jiang residence, she once again saw the young security guard she had noticed that night. He glanced at her briefly, quickly averted his gaze, and resumed standing at attention. Jiang Muyu walked over and greeted him. Unexpectedly, he acted as if he hadn’t seen her, his eyes fixed resolutely ahead.
Very well, pretending not to see me, huh? Jiang Muyu decided she wasn’t going anywhere. She stood before the guard, watching his serious pretense. But within two minutes, he couldn’t hold it any longer.
“Miss Jiang, I’m sorry. That night, I didn’t recognize your worth and mistook you for someone else… Now I realize my mistake. Please, forgive me and let me off…”
When Second Master told him that Jiang Muyu was no ordinary person, Hu Hu knew he was doomed. Even if Second Master hadn’t said it, the fact that a single palm had knocked him unconscious revealed what kind of person she really was. That was why, when Jiang Muyu appeared just now, Hu Hu had pretended not to see her. But that ruse failed.
Jiang Muyu smiled and patted his shoulder. “Young man, what’s there to be afraid of? I’m not going to eat you. But judging by the dark mark on your forehead, bad luck is clinging to you. It seems you’ve come into contact with something unclean…”
Hu Hu was stunned and didn’t even dare show any expression. “Miss Jiang, what do you mean? Please don’t scare me…”
He had been timid since childhood, and he feared anything supernatural.
Jiang Muyu pulled out a small yellow talisman from her pocket and waved it in front of him.
“Have you forgotten what I do? This is nothing.”
“Thank you, Miss Jiang!”
Hu Hu reached out to take it, but before his fingers could touch the edge, Jiang Muyu flicked it away.
“Miss Jiang, what are you doing?”
Jiang Muyu stepped back with the talisman in hand. “You should know that these things can’t be given to others just like that.”
Hu Hu paused, then dug into his pocket. “Miss Jiang, you want money, right? I can give you some now, but my salary isn’t much. Will two thousand be enough?”
Jiang Muyu held his arm to stop him from pulling out money. “Why are you being so polite? How could I possibly take your money?”
“Then what do you want me to do?”
Jiang Muyu glanced around, ensuring no one was nearby, before leaning close to whisper a few words in his ear.
Hu Hu looked toward the house in terror. “Miss Jiang, are you sure about this? Is it really okay?”
“Well, if you’re doomed by bad luck, I can’t help that…”
Jiang Muyu pretended to turn away, and Hu Hu hurried after her.
“All right, Miss Jiang, I agree. But if Second Master fires me later, you have to speak up for me!”
Jiang Muyu gave him a reassuring look and strode inside.
As soon as they entered, they saw Hu Feng waiting by the door and Jiang Muqing sitting in a wheelchair. Upon seeing her, Jiang Muqing immediately bombarded her with questions: “Why did the police summon you? Is it about yesterday’s car accident? Did you encounter Ren Qiming?”
“I did, but his forehead was blackened—a sign of severe misfortune. He probably won’t pay any attention to us these days.”
Jiang Muqing gave a subtle signal to the person behind him. Hu Hu looked at his Second Master, then at the man in the wheelchair, and quickly headed upstairs.
“What did he go to do?”
Jiang Muqing found their interaction odd and asked.
“I think he’s covered in bad luck too, so I decided to give him a talisman. But since my items aren’t free, I asked him to do me a small favor,” Jiang Muyu said casually as she sat down on the sofa.
With no guests present, the living room table held only a decorative piece; there wasn’t even tea.
Jiang Muqing didn’t concern himself with what so-called favor Hu Hu was to perform but pressed on with the earlier topic.
“You said Ren Qiming is going to have trouble soon. Is that true?”
“You’ll see in a few days.”
Jiang Muyu pulled out her phone and began responding to messages.
Seeing her indifferent attitude, Jiang Muqing felt uneasy and leaned closer to ask, “Who are you messaging?”
Before he finished speaking, he recognized the familiar profile picture on her screen.
Jiang Muqing wheeled himself closer and asked sharply, “You’re texting Yang Ruoling? How do you have her contact information?”
Hu Feng’s eyes widened, worried that his words or actions might upset Jiang Muyu and cause her to make his leg treatment more difficult.
But Jiang Muyu simply glanced at him coolly. “Isn’t it normal for me to have the contact of a beautiful woman? You don’t chat with her, but I can’t be forbidden from talking to her. Besides, she saw last night’s live stream and was worried about me.”
She was truly the granddaughter-in-law he had chosen; Jiang Muqing looked less impressive by comparison.
She clicked her tongue and thought maybe she should help Yang Ruoling find a better match.
Jiang Muqing felt a hint of disdain in her gaze and cleared his throat. “I just think Ruoling is busy most of the time. If it weren’t important, she probably wouldn’t contact you. As for why I don’t message her, it’s to avoid disturbing her work.”
“Oh.”
Jiang Muyu nodded perfunctorily, clearly unconvinced.
Not fond of messaging, huh? Then you don’t have to anymore. I’ll have a pleasant chat with the beauty myself, heh heh heh…
“Don’t be like that…”
Jiang Muqing was about to say more when Hu Hu, who had just gone upstairs, came rushing down holding something.
“Miss Jiang, I found it!”
When he reached the three of them, Jiang Muqing saw he was clutching a strangely made rag doll.
The doll had a crooked nose and slanted eyes. Its clothes were tattered and torn, especially at the legs, where the cotton stuffing was falling out.
Seeing it, Jiang Muqing felt deeply uncomfortable.
Hu Feng trembled slightly as he pointed at the doll. “Huzi, where did you find this?”
“Inside Jiang Muqing’s mattress,” Jiang Muyu answered.
She took the doll and toyed with it carelessly. Whoever made this was so crude it looked like a curse. Couldn’t they put some effort into it?
“How did you know I had something like this in my room?” Jiang Muqing frowned and asked.
Jiang Muyu replied, “I knew from day one. But your mattress is too thick, and I couldn’t move it myself, so I had to get him to help.”
