Chapter 58: Desire Brings Trouble
Wang Wenyu replied politely, with an unmistakable tone of warning, but Chen Anlong mistook her warning for a woman’s coyness.
He returned to his car, took his briefcase, pulled out a thick wad of unopened cash, and waved it in front of Wang Wenyu, slapping the bills against his palm with a loud “pa pa” sound, tempting her: “As long as you accompany me to this social event, this ten thousand will be yours.”
He even stepped closer, reaching out to grab Wang Wenyu’s arm.
Seeing Chen Anlong so brazenly making a move in broad daylight, Wang Wenyu quickly stepped back, dodging his hand, and said angrily, “Show some respect. Don’t think a few lousy bills make you anything special.”
Chen Anlong tried to advance again, but a security motorcycle sped over, stopping right in front of him. The officer riding pillion pointed at Chen Anlong, shouting sternly, “What do you think you’re doing in broad daylight? Do you have no regard for the law?”
Chen Anlong didn’t know their names, but they were familiar faces. He had a close relationship with Zheng Xiaomao and often visited the security team to drink tea and play cards. Most of the officers knew him well.
Usually, when the security officers patrolled this area and saw him, they’d greet him obsequiously, and he would play the part of the boss, tossing them fifty or a hundred as a tip. After all, having connections with the officers in the industrial district wasn’t without its uses.
But now, seeing these officers suddenly acting tough with him, Chen Anlong assumed it was because of Zheng Xiaomao’s recent troubles. He threatened them, “Have you all lost your minds? How dare you yell at me? Don’t think just because Zheng Xiaomao is in trouble that I’ve lost all my connections in your department. Believe it or not, one phone call from me and you’re out of a job.”
He said this to assert his status in front of Wang Wenyu, pulling out his cell phone to call his contacts in the security team.
The officers didn’t want to offend Chen Anlong, who was always generous with tips, but the new captain had given strict instructions, and they had witnessed what happened at the security office the previous day. With their jobs on the line, they had no choice but to risk offending Chen Anlong.
Still, they didn’t want to push him too far, so they only blocked his way without stopping him from making his calls.
Chen Anlong made two calls, but no one answered. Seeing the officers unmoved, refusing to back down, he lost his interest in causing further trouble and prepared to leave. Unexpectedly, the officers parked their motorcycle directly in front of his car, blocking his way, and called for backup—a second motorcycle arrived, cutting off his escape.
As the officers detained Chen Anlong, a crowd began to gather. Wang Wenyu, not wanting to draw attention, slipped away from the onlookers and returned to her car.
The officers refused to let Chen Anlong leave, so his driver returned to the factory office to get Deputy General Manager Tang to handle the situation.
Deputy General Manager Tang came to the factory gate, asked the security guards about what happened, and learned that the pretty woman Chen Anlong had harassed was there to see Jiang Fan. He immediately connected her with the woman who had been detained with Jiang Fan the previous night.
Deputy General Manager Tang, being shrewd, did not rush out to intervene but instead sent Ah Ping to find Jiang Fan.
At this point, Tang’s decision to have Jiang Fan step in was carefully calculated. He was wary of people with powerful backgrounds, knowing that if he got involved, there was little he could do for Chen Anlong. By having Jiang Fan handle it, he could stay clear of trouble and, when the opportunity arose, put in a good word for Chen Anlong, which was the best he could do.
Hearing Wang Wenyu urge him to endure for the sake of his job, Jiang Fan angrily shook off her hand: “What’s a job worth? If my own wife is bullied and I just swallow my pride, how am I any different from a coward? If I can turn a blind eye to something like this, do I even deserve to be called a man?”
Feeling Jiang Fan’s care for her once again, Wang Wenyu was filled with joy, but seeing his stubbornness flare up, she hid her happiness and feigned anger, pouting: “So you still know I’m your wife. Then you have to listen to me, or I’ll be mad.”
When Jiang Fan shook off her hand a bit too forcefully, he clutched his side and winced, “Ow…” He quickly added, “Fine, fine, fine—I won’t go looking for that bastard. Happy?”
Wang Wenyu steadied Jiang Fan, scolding him, “Stubborn as ever. Go sit in the car and rest. After we have dumplings at Uncle Qiu’s, we’ll go house hunting together.”
Jiang Fan nodded towards Chen Anlong’s car, asking, “What about what’s happening over there?”
Wang Wenyu glanced in that direction and said, “Leave it. Let the security team handle it. As long as you stay out of it, it’ll be fine.”
Back in the car, Jiang Fan, seeing how much Wang Wenyu cared for him, affectionately pinched her cheek: “Silly wife, I don’t want dumplings—I just want you.”
Wang Wenyu wrinkled her nose and playfully huffed, “In your dreams.”
To keep his mind off Chen Anlong, she patiently explained, “We’ve just arrived in Dongguan. We haven’t even settled in. You should stay at the factory for now, figure out your next move, and then leave. That way, there’ll be fewer complications.
If you go after him now, all you’ll do is beat him up and then have to find another job.
Most factories in Dongguan are used to exploiting their workers. If you switch factories, you’ll still owe favors or have to pay bribes, and things won’t be much better.
Anyway, he didn’t really do anything terrible to me. Just let it go. If you really care, once you’re established, there’ll be plenty of chances to deal with people like him. Why rush it now?”
Jiang Fan, after hearing her out, calmed down. He looked at Wang Wenyu with a mischievous glint and teased, “My wife is so clever, she thinks of everything. I’ll listen to you on this—but will you listen to me tonight?”
Wang Wenyu pouted, “Be serious for once. One moment you’re calling me silly, the next you’re saying I’m clever—no matter what I do, you always have an answer. We’ve only been in Dongguan a few days, and you’re already so slick-tongued. I wonder what Teacher Yan and Uncle Li would think—they always said you were honest and simple. I’ve never met anyone as ‘honest’ as you.”
“Why do you have to bring them up? Every time you do, I start missing them.”
Jiang Fan seemed to be joking, but in truth, he was thinking longingly of his two mentors.
Meanwhile, Deputy General Manager Tang, observing the officers’ behavior, realized Wang Wenyu’s background was indeed extraordinary. Seeing Jiang Fan return to the car, he didn’t try to approach them. Instead, he went to Chen Anlong and advised, “Call someone you trust in the security team and ask them to let you through. Then go and apologize to the young lady yourself. Whether she forgives you or not is her choice, but at least apologizing might prevent further trouble.”
Noticing how Wang Wenyu had ignored the officers the whole time, and their respectful caution in her presence, Chen Anlong realized his own lust had brought him trouble.
When Wang Wenyu avoided the crowd and got into the police car, his regret deepened.
Now, seeing her and Jiang Fan together, acting so intimately, Chen Anlong was not only shocked but also pettily convinced that Deputy General Manager Tang had known about Jiang Fan’s connection with this influential girl all along and had simply kept it from him.
Recently, Tang had repeatedly shown favoritism toward Jiang Fan, even quarreling with him because of Jiang Fan. It was all just using him as a stepping stone to get closer to Jiang Fan.
Now, Tang’s suggestion that he apologize was just to save face.
With this in mind, Chen Anlong shot Tang a glance and said in a commanding tone, “You’re the one who knows the security team better—make the call. I’ll apologize myself.”
Tang assumed Chen Anlong was just embarrassed at having lost face and didn’t take it personally. He complied, taking out his cell phone and dialing the security office.
