A supermarket in utter disarray.

It had clearly been visited before—instant noodles, bread, and other filling foods were gone. Yet, perhaps due to a hasty search, scattered candies and small packets of snacks still littered the floor.

Fan Li picked up a pack of milk candies from the ground, popped one into his mouth, and the familiar flavor spread gently—a faint milky fragrance that filled his palate, evoking a wistful haze of nostalgia.

Though the taste lingered, the world around him had changed beyond recognition.

“Actually, compared to milk candies, I liked soft taffy best. When my grandmother was still alive, she always prepared plenty for me,” he murmured.

“Hmm, I’ve tried that flavor too, but it’s just too sour,” came a small voice.

“If you like, you can take some, but not too much—too much sugar isn’t good for your teeth.”

Fan Li wandered through the filthy, chaotic supermarket, casually picking up scattered food as he walked, chatting to himself. Behind him trailed a petite figure, who bent and straightened repeatedly, stuffing the collected snacks into a bag slung over her shoulder. Before long, the expensive bag was bulging, unable to hold any more.

Aili was somewhat troubled; she had no choice but to open the bag and dump the overflow into her mouth, crunching noisily in response to Fan Li’s rambling.

Fan Li wasn’t usually talkative, but prolonged silence made one go mad. Besides the danger of the monsters in this apocalypse, the most unbearable was the suffocating loneliness.

Aili couldn’t understand what Fan Li was saying, nor did he expect comfort from a little monster. He simply sought an outlet, someone to share the shadows clouding his heart.

After parting with the woman wielding scissors, Fan Li returned “Button” to the monster manual. Healing Button’s wounds cost him twenty points of his killing value.

Button’s skin was so thin. Watching his painstakingly accumulated killing points drop once again made Fan Li’s heart ache.

As for choosing monsters or preserving dignity, Fan Li was indifferent. Although power ruled this world and looks offered little survival advantage, he still recognized himself as human. He wouldn’t, like some martial arts novel characters, sacrifice himself to become a cripple just to obtain unparalleled skills.

“The other party didn’t seem heartless. If fate allows us to meet again, maybe I can ask to change the terms.”

Having resolved this thought, Fan Li left with Aili. After gathering some killing points, they came to this supermarket for a brief rest.

“Thump… thump…”

Noisy footsteps echoed from the entrance.

Fan Li took a sip of water, grabbed a nearby katana, and walked toward the door.

Humans and zombies were actually easy to tell apart.

Humans, to avoid trouble, tended to walk cautiously and slowly. Zombies, however, could not move lightly due to their undead nature. Usually, their raucous noises could be heard from a great distance.

Fan Li pushed open the door.

A gaunt-faced zombie with blood smeared around its mouth and milky white eyes was passing by the supermarket entrance.

What a coincidence.

Healing Button had cost him many killing points; Fan Li needed to replenish quickly. As he raised his katana to strike, the blade froze midair.

“Huh?”

Fan Li squinted, scanning the zombie. Usually, zombies pounced the moment they saw humans, like vultures attracted to carrion. But this one ignored him completely, stepping forward slowly as if unaware of Fan Li’s presence.

“Something’s off…”

Fan Li instinctively lifted his arm, seeing it still stained with blood and feeling his heart beat strongly. He was certain he wasn’t infected, not one of the undead.

He was still human—so why wasn’t this zombie interested in him?

Watching the zombie shuffle forward, he wondered if it might possess some intelligence, feigning indifference on sight, ready to flee swiftly once around the corner or out of sight.

If so, he wouldn’t mind leaving it behind, to keep Button company—after all, Button was the only employee under Aili’s command, and life was hard for him.

Not only did he endure Aili’s occasional moods, but sometimes he even served as a human cushion.

But clearly, Fan Li was overthinking. The zombie’s movements remained slow and vacant, its gait stumbling as if drawn by something invisible, moving forward at a sluggish pace.

This piqued Fan Li’s curiosity.

Was there anything that attracted zombies more than humans?

This was like a shut-in who suddenly lost interest in lolis and swimsuits, instead obsessively collecting videos of burly men picking their feet—a bewildering thought.

Or perhaps the crisis plaguing this world had been resolved. Maybe the zombies had a sudden epiphany, recognized their errors, ceased attacking humans, and became part of building a new era?

Could the living and the dead now coexist peacefully?

Fan Li shook his head, realizing he really had been alone too long. Lacking communication, his imagination soared in his self-talk.

This scene was far too abnormal!

He sniffed the air, detecting an unusual scent.

He decided to follow the zombie and see what exactly was attracting it.

With that thought, Fan Li snapped his fingers behind him.

“Aili, stop eating and focus!”

At his command, Aili ended her delightful scavenging, hoisted the bulging snack bag, and approached Fan Li with her large hammer.

Fan Li walked along a narrow path—not a main road, but surrounded by several residential complexes. In better days, this place bustled with traffic, and street vendors called out their wares.

Don’t underestimate the economic impact of such a street. For vendors, the residents along the way could easily fill their coffers.

But now…

The lively district held not a single living person. Apart from Aili, Fan Li was the only human in the vast surroundings.

Perhaps the oppressive atmosphere cast a gray pall over everything, like a graveyard—eerily silent.

This place was no longer fit for humans.

“Thump… thump…”

Fan Li heard footsteps again. He looked over and saw two zombies walking side by side, not far from him. Normally, the scent of humans would drive them mad, but these two didn’t even glance back, simply moving forward.

This only deepened Fan Li’s curiosity. Like a shadow, he quietly trailed them, not interrupting their pilgrimage-like persistence, following forward.
