Li Bing stood atop the wall, surveying the scene before him. As expected, a group of grotesque zombies lingered not far away, their faces twisted into terrifying snarls.
In his usual understanding, zombies would immediately turn feral upon spotting the living, advancing relentlessly without hesitation, no matter the weapons pointed at them.
But what was happening now?
Though their mouths were torn open, resembling vengeful spirits, the zombies did not take a single step forward. It was as if some invisible force restrained them, a sight both baffling and astonishing.
“Dongzi, what’s going on here?” Li Bing turned his head to the side. The man addressed was in his early thirties, broad-shouldered and stout, known on the streets as Brother Dong.
Though living in an era governed by law, no matter how violent one’s nature or ruthless one’s methods, there had to be a veneer of legitimacy. Extorting protection fees openly rarely lasted long before the police intervened. Li Bing, wealthy and resourceful, and Dongzi had thus teamed up to start a property management company.
On the surface, the fees were legitimate; behind the scenes, they pressured reluctant tenants to relocate. This way, Li Bing’s business empire grew stronger, and Dongzi, with Li Bing’s support, successfully rebranded himself as CEO Dong.
In this apocalypse, Dongzi held another role: he was Li Bing’s squad leader, having recently secured a cache of firearms that cemented his position as second-in-command at the base.
“Brother Bing, I don’t know either. I planned to shoot the zombies once they got closer, but strangely, they just stood there, not advancing a single step,” Dongzi admitted.
Li Bing’s expression darkened, his tone grim. “This is really damned strange. These...”
Dongzi nodded repeatedly, having learned the art of flattery after spending time with Li Bing.
But before Li Bing could finish, his voice abruptly cut off. Dongzi’s suspicion flared; he turned his head just in time to see something that made his legs tremble uncontrollably and his face turn ghostly pale.
What did he see?
Right before him, the leader who had been contemplating the dire situation a moment ago now bore a bloodied hole in his forehead. Embedded in his skull was a steel nail.
The force was so great that Li Bing’s head was partially torn open, his brow split, blood pouring down his skull. His expensive clothes soaked instantly in crimson. His pupils were vacant—he was clearly dead.
“He’s dead...” Dongzi shuddered uncontrollably.
Li Bing’s death immediately drew attention. As panic spread, some nearby people were still unaware that a new crisis was unfolding on the battlefield.
“The zombies are moving!” someone shouted.
Dongzi looked up to see the previously motionless zombies slowly advancing toward the camp like hellish specters summoned from the underworld.
Their pace was slow, but among them emerged a small, agile figure wielding a massive hammer nearly as tall as itself.
As this diminutive silhouette approached, Dongzi glimpsed a face beyond description—no human features remained. Instead, there was a gaping maw filled with rows of teeth, a monstrous visage.
“Open fire!”
“Shoot them!”
With Li Bing’s bizarre death, Dongzi assumed command of the battle. He raised his pistol first, though terror was plain on his face.
Within the camp, only a handful could wield firearms—guns were precious, and such lethal weapons were reserved for trusted hands.
Following Dongzi’s order, five people, including him, aimed their guns at the charging... monster.
“Fire—”
Dongzi’s command was cut short as a tremendous force hurled him backward. In that instant, he felt as though struck by a speeding car, the impact flinging him off the wall and onto the ground.
Not only Dongzi was attacked. The trusted shooters beside him were assailed one after another, falling backward off the wall.
As confusion reigned, a towering, grotesque creature—over two meters tall—suddenly appeared atop the city wall, like a projection from nightmare.
Everyone’s thoughts froze in that moment.
A deafening roar erupted from the creature’s massive, bloodshot eyes as it surveyed all living things in sight. Perhaps celebrating the carnage to come, it emitted a piercing shriek that threatened to burst eardrums.
People clasped their ears; even Lu Tao, who had slain zombies before, felt his legs weaken and collapsed to the ground.
The creature’s eyes burned with bloodlust. Those who met its gaze felt their souls shred, courage draining away entirely.
Lu Tao had faced zombies head-on before, but this abomination, both in appearance and aura, was leagues beyond common undead. It was like a blade piercing his chest, constricting his breath, making it hard to breathe.
The oppressive atmosphere was suffocating, but worse was yet to come.
Just as chaos erupted from the monster’s appearance, a thunderous crash echoed ahead. Everyone’s pupils constricted to thin slits as the iron gate of the defensive compound toppled.
With the gate down, it was only a matter of time before the zombies stormed the compound.
Witnessing these abnormal horrors, the survivors around were struck with icy fear, their screams unprecedented in desperation—far more wretched than when they saw Li Bing shot dead.
Some collapsed, convulsing helplessly on the ground; others fled frantically, wishing for more legs to run as far as possible.
In an instant, the chaos escalated sharply.
“Run... run!” Lu Tao, regaining some composure, urged a friend beside him. But Liu Shang was already stunned, frozen in place, too shocked to move.
While everyone was at a loss, unsure how to survive, a loud, authoritative male voice rang out from outside:
“People inside, listen up! You are surrounded! Lay down your weapons immediately. Surrender is your only way out!”
“I’ll say it again: if you drop your weapons, you still have a chance to live. But if you stubbornly resist, death is the only outcome!”
Lu Tao’s expression went blank, his mind utterly numb. The only reason for his disorientation was this: amidst the chaotic horde of corpses outside, there were... still living humans?
