Chapter 110: The Death Classroom
Fan Li stood by the back door, gazing at the classroom. Inside, the "students" sat motionless, their eyes fixed on the rear glass. Unlike ordinary zombies, they did not respond with twisted faces; instead, they sat dazedly in their chairs, not even blinking. Their faces, however, were decayed, as if they had crawled out of the earth as the deceased, utterly devoid of life.
"Wait for me."
Fan Li tried to enter, but after several attempts, it was clear the back door was locked. He had no choice but to go in through the front.
As he turned, he saw half a body step out from the classroom—a woman with loose hair, dressed in professional attire, and wearing black high heels. Her appearance starkly contrasted with the surrounding gloom, as if she were an ordinary person who had wandered into this place by mistake.
But looking up from her collar, Fan Li noticed wrinkles on her face resembling stretch marks, her bulging eyes seemed ready to pop out at him, and her body was noticeably tilted, as if her left arm had been broken. She stood oddly in place.
The zombie noticed Fan Li and opened her mouth to reveal blackened teeth. She spoke: "go… back…"
It seemed she was trying to communicate. When she spoke, Fan Li’s expression shifted—if he heard correctly, the words were in English?
Judging by her outfit, she was clearly a teacher, and an English teacher at that.
“I hate English the most,” Fan Li muttered quietly.
“Go back.”
Though the tone was faint, Fan Li understood—it meant to return.
Return?
Return to the classroom?
Inside, a dozen zombies sat neatly in rows, with books on each desk. Bloodlust was a zombie’s nature; without extraordinary control, they wouldn’t sit obediently but would attack frenziedly upon seeing humans.
This strange behavior suggested one thing: something above the zombies’ level was hiding in this classroom.
A mutant?
Or some other monster?
Perhaps having faced too many anomalies, Fan Li was somewhat prepared. He flicked the tip of his knife upward.
Helping the students "graduate" had long been his goal; if anyone tried to stop him, he wouldn’t hesitate to use force.
At that moment, the professionally dressed female zombie parted her lips, revealing neat, dark teeth interlaced with strands of bloody flesh, and uttered again:
“Go… back…”
Unprepared, Fan Li suddenly felt goosebumps erupt all over him, like mushrooms sprouting after rain. In an instant, the sensation engulfed his entire body.
The voice seemed to carry some kind of magic, leaving him defenseless.
His thoughts shattered instantly, his mind flooded with murmurs and screams.
Then, he felt his right leg move forward on its own. In that moment, Fan Li saw thin threads, finer than hair, binding his body and robbing him of control.
“Aili…”
Fan Li tried to call out. Though his limbs no longer obeyed, he could still open and close his mouth, so he desperately sought help.
Desperately, he glimpsed Aili approaching, but she moved like a marionette, inching forward bit by bit.
Aili struggled, flailing her arms in a futile attempt to break free from the invisible threads. The female zombie looked over, her mouth opening and closing, muffled and indistinct words spilling into the air again.
Aili’s movements slowed, eventually ceasing altogether as she was fully restrained.
Fan Li gritted his teeth, fighting the rising panic. Gradually, he felt himself drawn step by step toward the zombie.
Face to face.
Less than half a meter apart, he detected no foul stench of decay. Were it not for her repulsive face, he might have mistaken her for an ordinary person.
The female zombie glanced at Fan Li and Aili, then stepped into the classroom. The bound pair followed behind, like two truant students caught by a strict teacher.
“Heh heh…”
“Awaw…”
At the doorway, the zombies had remained calm, but now, sensing flesh so close, they grew slightly frantic.
Students should obey.
The female zombie in high heels strode directly to the students. She stopped before one and raised her arm, delivering a hard slap. A large head flew off, smashing against the glass.
“Bang!”
The bloody, mangled head fell to the ground, and the body slumped slowly, collapsing lifelessly.
The female zombie repeated the motion twice more, effectively removing two students from the classroom.
The zombies fell silent again, their heads lowered, murmuring indistinct words. They were accustomed to this form of discipline.
Fan Li took another step forward and found himself in the first row, replacing one of the zombies—becoming one of them.
In his view sat a bloated, severely decayed zombie. Its drooping head slowly turned and looked up at Fan Li from below.
Saliva mixed with foul stench dripped down.
It seemed to greet its new deskmate in its own grotesque way, willing, if possible, to draw closer and tear at his flesh as a welcome.
The female zombie looked at Fan Li and Aili seated in their chairs and even gave a slight nod.
Then she picked up a piece of chalk, her body twisting as she pressed it against the blackboard, producing a series of grating sounds. Shapes began to appear on the board.
As she wrote, both zombies and Fan Li sat upright, maintaining the most proper posture.
Fan Li tried to make sense of this surreal encounter. Watching the female zombie’s actions, a strange thought suddenly came to him: was this zombie teaching a class?
No living person remained in the classroom. Here was a creature unlike any zombie, instructing a group of bloodthirsty monsters.
This was a monster trapped within a certain level of consciousness.
It reminded Fan Li of the buttons busy at the workbench—they had become zombies but retained stubbornness unseen in ordinary bloodthirsty creatures, thanks to memories of their former lives.
