Volume One, Chapter 103: Warming the Bed
Page 1/3
When Song Qingyu stepped out of the hotel, the heat in her cheeks had not yet faded.
Pei Jingmo watched her hurried, somewhat frantic steps and caught her arm. “It’s cold outside. Put your scarf on.”
Song Qingyu reached out to take the scarf, but Pei Jingmo had already slipped it around her neck. “It was just teasing. Don’t take it seriously.”
She had kept her head down, but on hearing that she lifted her eyes to him.
They were so close that, with their height difference, she could see only his Adam’s apple and chin.
She had to admit, he was rather handsome.
If Pei Jingmo had not spoken, she could have found another way to repay him, but now that he had said exactly what he wanted, anything else would feel insincere.
“Well, it was just a kiss, wasn’t it? Not as if she’d lose a piece of flesh.”
After making up her mind, Song Qingyu rose on tiptoe and kissed his chin.
Pei Jingmo was startled. His dark eyes brimmed with wild joy as he looked at her in disbelief, his arm around her unconsciously tightening.
Song Qingyu buried her flushed face back into her scarf and played dead.
“Qing—”
His voice trembled from excitement.
She didn’t know what he meant to say, and she didn’t want to hear it. “Don’t say anything.”
Pei Jingmo gave a fond smile. “All right. As you wish.”
This scene was seen by Chu Xingzhi and Sheng Yuru as they stepped out at the same time.
Chu Xingzhi stood there with his fist clenched, face pale and ugly.
Song Qingyu was traditional, conservative, never the kind to show affection in public, least of all to initiate it herself.
She had never imagined she would kiss that poor, penniless laborer.
Sheng Yuru lifted her brow at Chu Xingzhi. “Hmph. You still brood over her, but she’s already given her heart to someone else.”
Chu Xingzhi glared at Sheng Yuru in anger.
Sheng Yuru was unafraid. “What are you glaring at me for? I didn’t make Song Qingyu kiss her husband.”
Sheng Yuru liked Chu Xingzhi, but she had been beaten over these two days, and Chu had never come to her defense. She resented him deeply.
She gave a small snort and walked over to them.
“Ho, sleeping together every day is not enough; now you’re making eyes in public. Is that what you call a proper custom?”
Seeing Sheng Yuru, Song Qingyu instinctively drew Pei Jingmo behind her.
After what Pei Jingmo had done to Sheng yesterday, Sheng certainly would not let this one pass.
That little move thrilled Pei Jingmo inwardly, while Chu Xingzhi slipped into jealous madness.
“We are married. What we do is our freedom. If you cannot bear to watch, dig your own eyes out.”
“Shameless!”
“Who is shameless? Heaven knows.”
Sheng Yuru suddenly recalled something and said with a saucy smile, “Last night, did you hear something?”
“Honestly—who knew you were so good at moaning!”

Sheng Yuru had intended only to provoke Song Qingyu, but she was the one turned to nothing.
She aimed her words at Pei Jingmo behind Song, and this damned man had dared to hit her.
Yet Gu Yuandong’s warning still rang in her ears, and no matter how angry she was, she did not dare to do anything reckless.
“Song Qingyu, this time you were lucky. Keep your husband under control. Next time, I will not spare either of you.”
Song Qingyu did not fear her threat. “The one who starts it got what he deserves. If you don’t want another beating, don’t show up before us. We’re leaving.”
As Song Qingyu pulled Pei Jingmo away, she saw Chu Xingzhi.
The two sets of eyes met in midair. In Chu Xingzhi’s gaze were thick sadness and grief, as if a whole heart of words wanted to come out.
Song Qingyu’s face showed nothing; she did not even hesitate before turning away her eyes and moving on.
Chu Xingzhi knew all too well that the Song Qingyu who had once wanted to grow old beside him was drifting farther from him with each day.
Yet he refused to accept it.
They had not slept for two nights and one day.
Once they got into the car, Song Qingyu fell asleep.
Seeing that her sleep seemed uneasy, afraid she might wake sore all over, Pei Jingmo held her in his arms, setting his legs on the back seat.
Song Qingyu was clearly exhausted. Even all his fidgeting and fussing, she did not wake.
Pei Jingmo, looking at her perfect sleeping face, could not help but lower his head and kiss her forehead. “Sweet dreams.”
His phone rang suddenly. He could not tell who it was, and not wanting to wake Song Qingyu, he hung up at once.
Soon, a text from Lu Rongrong arrived.
“Mr. Lu left me all alone on the mountain. Is that too ungentlemanly?”
Pei Jingmo’s lips curled into a cold smile. It seemed Lu Rongrong did not yet understand him all the way through.
He had never been anything like a gentleman.
“Are you not afraid I’ll run to Uncle Gu with a complaint?”
Fearing Lu Rongrong would keep interrupting him, Pei Jingmo still sent a reply. “Miss Lu likes to complain, so please tell Master Fu everything about what happened on the mountain, down to the smallest detail.”
Lu Rongrong was clever. She knew Fu Linhan would investigate later, and had already scrubbed herself clean of everything.
Still, she could not guarantee there would be no flaw at all; when one has a guilty heart, one naturally catches every hint.
Just as expected, Lu Rongrong wrote again: “I was joking. You took it so seriously. Do you think I’m someone who enjoys tattling?”
Pei Jingmo pretended not to see it.
She sent one more.
“I’m a bit sorry I couldn’t soak in the hot spring with you. Still, this trip to Nine Emperor Mountain was wonderful. I hope you were happy too.”
Pei Jingmo switched on Do Not Disturb, glanced at his sleeping wife in his arms, and smiled slightly.
He truly was very happy.
Song Qingyu slept so deeply that she never knew when he carried her to bed at home.
Her body was never strong; one sleepless night and a heart worn to pieces left her so tired that once she slept, she could not wake.
That evening Pei Jingmo called her up, and after she ate a little she fell asleep again.
That sleep lasted all the way to broad daylight.

When she woke and found herself in Pei Jingmo’s arms, her whole body was in disarray.
Did Pei Jingmo sleepwalk again last night?
Steady, steady!
If it had been sleepwalking, he would surely have moved away by now.
To avoid embarrassment, Song Qingyu kept her eyes closed and pretended to sleep.
After a moment she heard soft rustling nearby. She waited. When the sound faded, thinking he had gone, she opened her eyes.
Then she saw a face that was both cool and handsome.
“Good morning.”
Pei Jingmo smiled; when he smiled, a dimple on his right cheek made him irresistible.
No—
How could a handsome man tempt her at this hour?
Wasn’t he sleepwalking? Why was he still here?
“You—”
“Last night you insisted on pulling me to sleep with you, but I promise, I did nothing.”
Song Qingyu was dumbfounded; her whole body faltered.
How could she have pulled him to bed when she hadn’t even been drunk?
A few scenes flashed through her mind.
After dinner, Pei Jingmo brought her a glass of milk and handed it to her. She drank it and lay down, but the blanket was already cold, and she felt chilly.
Pei Jingmo was warm, and then she had somehow asked, “Could we sleep together?”
This was madness.
If the blanket was cold, she could at most turn on an electric blanket or the air-conditioning. Why must she have Pei Jingmo warm her bed?
Ah, this is a real disgrace!
“Um…”
Song Qingyu stammered, cheeks burning. “If I ever make such an improper request or demand again, you can refuse me very strictly.”
“No.”
“Huh?”
“For me, that was not improper—”
Song Qingyu waited for the rest of his sentence, but he only smiled and left the room.
“What?”
Even as she wrung her hands in thought, she could not understand. If that was not improper, then what was it?
