Stop, all of you!
Under Ji Shen’s relentless questioning, Xia Anran finally admitted her crime.
She had deliberately instigated others to commit offenses, and for that she was to be sentenced to ten years in prison.
The Xia family nearly went mad upon hearing it.
Their precious daughter was actually going to be locked away for ten years.
They pulled every connection they could find, begged every favor they could, but nothing worked.
Wen Shuang only gave a cold laugh. “Ten years is nothing. For someone like her, it is still far too light.”
“Life imprisonment would suit such a vile wretch far better.”
During this period, whenever Ji Shen handled official business, Tang Yan stayed by Wen Shuang’s side.
“Xia Anran deserves to rot in the eighteenth level of hell and be boiled in oil!”
Wen Shuang looked down at her own numb legs. Even that would not be enough to satisfy her hatred.
“If I could, I’d crush her legs with my own hands and let her know what it feels like never to dance again for the rest of her life.”
Tang Yan agreed with fervor, then gently touched Wen Shuang’s legs to comfort her.
“Shuangshuang, the specialists came yesterday, didn’t they say the chances of your recovery were still pretty good? You don’t need to worry. They’re the best doctors in the world.”
Wen Shuang slowly nodded.
After the leg specialists had come yesterday, she had indeed felt much better than before.
At least now, it no longer seemed as though there were no hope at all.
And it was all thanks to Ji Shen; without him, she would never have had access to such top-tier treatment.
“Wen Shuang! You little bitch, did you goad Ji Shen into sentencing our Ranran?”
That day, Wen Shuang actually had an appetite for once and finished a bowl of millet porridge.
To her surprise, the Xia family stormed straight into the ward. Mrs. Xia ignored the attempts to stop her, pointed at Wen Shuang’s nose, and cursed, “If you know what’s good for you, tell Ji Shen to let Ranran go right now. Otherwise, our Xia family will never let this rest!”
Tang Yan immediately rose to stand in front of Wen Shuang.
She had already been bottling up fury for days, and now Mrs. Xia had walked right into the line of fire.
Tang Yan snapped, “Who are you calling a bitch, you filthy old hag? You can’t even raise your own daughter properly, and instead of staying home and repenting, you come here making trouble. Have you no shame? No wonder Xia Anran is so brazen and shameless — she takes after you! Get out of here at once and stop disturbing Shuangshuang’s rest!”
“What’s shameless is you all!” Mrs. Xia was clearly furious to the point of madness. In the ward, she was no different from a shrew. “If it weren’t for this little bitch, would our Ranran have been sentenced to ten years in prison? Our Ranran is a young lady from a proper family; she’s never suffered such humiliation. Wen Shuang, tell Ji Shen to release her immediately!”
“Release my ass. People like Xia Anran are better off staying locked up — once she’s out, she’ll only go on harming others.” Tang Yan was this close to slapping Mrs. Xia across the face. “Open your damn eyes and look carefully: Shuangshuang’s legs were ruined by Xia Anran, and she can never dance again in this lifetime. And what about Xia Anran? She only got ten years. If it were me, I’d want her legs crippled too!”
“Losing a pair of legs? Wen Shuang lost her legs, but our Ranran lost her freedom!” Mrs. Xia screamed hysterically and charged forward, grabbing Wen Shuang by the collar.
Tang Yan slapped her hand away with all her might.
Wen Shuang roared, “Don’t touch me. I feel sick just looking at people from the Xia family!”
She grabbed the thermos from the bedside table and hurled it viciously at Mr. and Mrs. Xia. If the two of them had not dodged quickly, it would have smashed straight into their temples.
“Get out! Xia Anran ruined my legs, left me unable to dance, and took away my dream. Yet in your mouths, it all sounds so casual, so trivial? Right now I think ten years is still too light. I could drain her blood, strip her skin, and still not ease the hatred in my heart!”
“Wen Shuang, you bitch, so this is how vicious you are after all! Even now you dare curse our Ranran. Just wait and see how I deal with you!”
Mr. Xia also barked angrily, “Ji Shen must be blind to have taken a fancy to a venomous woman like you!”
Tang Yan, enraged, immediately lunged into a fight with Mrs. Xia.
Young and quick on her feet, she slapped Mrs. Xia twice in rapid succession and seized her by the hair, slamming her head against the wall.
Mr. Xia flew into a rage, grabbed Tang Yan, and shoved her hard to the floor.
Wen Shuang screamed, “Yan Yan!”
She struggled, trying to get out of bed.
Amid the chaos, someone suddenly rushed in from the doorway and forced the three of them apart, bellowing, “Enough!”
It was Xia Hanyan.
Wen Shuang shrank back.
Xia Hanyan, however, dragged his disheveled mother back and snapped, “Dad, Mom! What are you doing? You barged into someone’s ward and started hitting people — have you lost all sense of propriety?”
He knew his parents had always spoiled Xia Anran, but he had not expected them to spoil her to the point of insanity.
Fortunately, he had people keeping an eye on them. The moment he heard they had come to the hospital, he rushed over from the company at once. Seeing the mess in the ward, he shuddered to think what might have happened if he had arrived even a moment later.
This was the first time Xia Hanyan had seen Wen Shuang since her car accident.
The woman looked far weaker than before.
Her lips, which had always been a vivid red, were now pale; her lovely face held no color, and her whole body radiated a deep weariness.
Even her almond-shaped eyes were red from agitation.
“Brother Hanyan, you came at just the right time. This damned Wen Shuang and her friend even hit your father and me just now. They’ve really gone too far — teach them a proper lesson!”
Mrs. Xia clutched her son’s hand, thinking she had found a savior.
But Xia Hanyan flung her hand away. “The ones who should apologize are you!”
“Miss Wen was injured in a car accident and is recovering. Yet you came charging into her ward without asking questions, without knowing the facts. If the police came, they would arrest you on the spot!”
Mr. Xia stared in astonishment. “Xia Hanyan, have you turned your elbow outward? You’re taking this woman’s side? It was she who got your own sister sent to prison — ten years in prison, no less. Have you lost your mind?”
“If Xia Anran hadn’t harmed Miss Wen, would she have ended up like this?” Xia Hanyan had always been clear-minded and fair. During his years abroad, he had developed a sound moral compass. Even if his own sister was in the wrong, he would not blindly defend her.
“The one who is truly suffering is Miss Wen. She has been ruined by Ranran, lost her legs, and lost her dream. Dad, Mom, what you should be doing now is apologizing, not questioning her. Otherwise, having parents like you would only make me deeply disappointed!”
Mrs. Xia widened her eyes. “Xia Hanyan, have you gone mad? You’re actually speaking up for this vixen!”
“Mom, mind your words! If it weren’t for how you two have spoiled Anran all these years, giving her whatever she wanted, she would never have been coddled into this state. The truth is, the way she turned out today is inseparable from your failures as parents!”
Xia Hanyan stepped directly in front of Wen Shuang to shield her.
Even Wen Shuang was taken aback.
She had never expected Xia Hanyan to stand in opposition to his own parents and sister for her sake.
Unable to bear being contradicted in front of others, Mrs. Xia lost all face and rushed at Xia Hanyan, raising her hand to strike him.
“Stop right there!”
Ji Shen, wearing his police uniform, finally arrived at the ward!
