I still truly hope that you and Shen will have a child together.

Wen Shuang covered her lips, retching again.
Tang Yan hurriedly supported her. “Although I’ve never given birth, I’ve watched plenty of TV dramas growing up. Shuang Shuang, have you recently lost your appetite, vomiting whatever you eat, and feeling unusually sleepy?”
Wen Shuang was taken aback.
Thinking back, it did seem to be the case lately.
A few days ago, Ji Shen brought her her favorite roasted pig trotters late at night, but she took one bite and immediately vomited.
She also felt easily fatigued, wanting to sleep at every turn.
Before, she could rehearse all day without tiring, but now she grew exhausted quickly.
She was stunned and touched her abdomen.
Could it be... she really was pregnant?
“Shuang Shuang, if all these symptoms fit, then there’s a good chance you are!” Tang Yan’s eyes widened. “But is this baby a surprise, or did you two plan this?”
Wen Shuang lowered her gaze. “...I guess it’s a surprise.”
“What are you planning to do? Are you going to tell Officer Ji?”
Seeing her conflicted expression, Tang Yan comforted her, “From the way Officer Ji cares about you, if you’re expecting, he’ll definitely be happy. Maybe he’ll even bring up marriage!”
Wen Shuang’s emotions were complicated.
“Yan Yan, if it were you, what would you do?”
“Well! That depends on who it is,” Tang Yan stroked her chin thoughtfully. “If it’s someone I love, I’d choose to keep the baby!”
Wen Shuang placed her hand on her abdomen...
She did love Ji Shen, no doubt, but she was a dancer. Having a child would take a heavy toll on her body.
At least two years off the stage!
She would miss her prime.
For this reason, most dancers choose to delay childbirth to older age or avoid it altogether, so as not to affect their technique.
With a whirlwind of thoughts, Wen Shuang returned home.
The man saw her mood was off. “What’s wrong?”
She glanced at him, then looked down. “I... it’s nothing.”
“If it’s nothing, why do you look so down? You must be hiding something from me,” Ji Shen reached out to tickle her.
Wen Shuang couldn’t help but laugh and pushed him away. “Don’t mess with me now.”
“If I don’t mess with you now, when will I?”
As he tickled her, he suddenly leaned over her!
Wen Shuang immediately understood what he wanted.
But she might be... pregnant.
She pulled away. “No, I’m not feeling well today!”
“Where does it hurt? Hmm? Let me help you feel better.” Ji Shen’s hand slipped under her clothes.
Suddenly, Wen Shuang gagged!
She pushed him away and hurried to the trash can to vomit.
Ji Shen froze.
Though a man, he knew something about early pregnancy symptoms.
His smile vanished instantly, replaced by a grave expression. “What’s going on?”
Wen Shuang bent over the trash can, dry heaving.
Her chestnut hair fell beside her ears, adding to her fragile look. “I don’t know either...”

Ji Shen frowned. “How long has it been since your last period?”
He suddenly recalled that over the past month or so, Wen Shuang hadn’t had her period. Before, she’d at least have a week off every month!
So he had a pretty good memory of her cycle.
Wen Shuang said, “More than a month.”
“Did you take the contraceptive pill last time?” His gaze sharpened, staring straight at her.
She lowered her head, voice low: “...I did.”
“Wen Shuang, look me in the eye and answer again.”
She nervously tugged at the hem of her clothes, a small gesture that didn’t escape Ji Shen’s eyes.
Slowly, she lifted her head and bit her lip.
His voice turned deep and serious: “Say it again. Did you take the pill or not?”
Her lips parted and closed.
“...Afterwards, I accidentally forgot.”
“I remember I reminded you several times.”
He fixed her with a piercing gaze.
Wen Shuang replied, “I bought the pills, but got caught up with work at the theater. By the time I took them, the optimal window had passed.”
That was the truth.
She had indeed bought the pills.
But after seeing Ji Shen and Jiang Ning’s posts on Weibo, she forgot all about taking them.
Then the theater called for an emergency rehearsal.
That’s when she completely forgot, and only took the pill the next day.
Who could have guessed...
“You didn’t tell me the truth about this,” he said sharply, scrutinizing every flicker on her face.
Wen Shuang lowered her eyes.
She felt regret and uncertainty for missing the best time.
In short, her emotions were tangled, and she hadn’t told him.
She also wanted to see how he’d react.
So that was it.
“If I’m pregnant, you’d be pretty unhappy, wouldn’t you?”
“We’re not even married yet. Suddenly having a child—do you think I’d be happy?”
His gaze was heavy, his tone somber.
Wen Shuang was speechless.
Indeed!
They weren’t anything official yet!
“If I am, I’ll terminate it!”
“Don’t say so much yet,” Ji Shen quickly put on his coat. “Let’s go to the hospital now and get checked.”
“At this hour, the maternity ward’s closed,” Wen Shuang said.
“Then let’s buy pregnancy tests at a 24-hour pharmacy.”
Without waiting for a reply, Ji Shen left.

Ten minutes later, he returned with three pregnancy tests and handed them to Wen Shuang.
She took them silently.
Tested three times in a row.
All negative.
The man exhaled in relief, and so did she.
Ji Shen stared at the tests for a while, seeing no change, then went to take a shower.
When he came out, his expression was much calmer.
“My job is different from most people’s. I hope you understand.”
Recently, his superiors had repeatedly warned him to avoid any scandal.
Dating was fine, but if there was news of an unwed pregnancy, it would hurt his chances of promotion.
He wasn’t willing to take that risk.
Besides, though he liked Wen Shuang, marriage was far from his mind.
“I understand you,” Wen Shuang said, unsure whether it was physical discomfort or emotional unease that weighed heavier. “Without this child, it’s better for both of us.”
“Tomorrow we’ll do another test at the hospital,” Ji Shen said before sleeping.
Wen Shuang nodded.
That night, they went to sleep quietly, each with their own thoughts.
Early the next morning, Ji Shen reminded her again to go to the hospital.
This time, Wen Shuang didn’t forget and headed straight to gynecology for blood tests and analysis.
After finishing, she unexpectedly ran into Jiang Ning.
Jiang Ning raised her eyebrows the moment she saw her.
She immediately guessed why Wen Shuang was at the gynecology department.
“Miss Wen, are you pregnant?”
Wen Shuang replied coldly, “None of your business!”
“If you are pregnant, Brother Shen won’t be happy. Believe me, he won’t let you keep the child. He might even break up with you.”
Jiang Ning knew Ji Shen well enough to say that.
Wen Shuang’s heart jolted.
Ji Shen had been unhappy when he found out last night.
She herself couldn’t quite put a name to what she felt.
Was it disappointment? Or relief?
Jiang Ning smiled slyly. “Wen Shuang, just for that, I kind of hope you are pregnant.”
Ten minutes later, the test results came back!
