Old Madam Ji let out a cough!

Ji Shen snapped back to his senses and quickly released Wen Shuang.

He was startled. "Grandmother, why are you here?"

Old Madam Ji was so angry she thumped her cane on the ground. "You have the nerve to ask how I found out? Wen Shuang has been through something this terrible and you didn't tell me—do you even still see me as your grandmother?"

Last night had been the monthly family gathering. Normally, unless something extraordinary came up, Ji Shen would always make an appearance no matter how busy he was!

But yesterday, he hadn't shown up.

His father had asked why.

His mother had said, in a huff, "Don't you know? Lately, that young man of ours has been completely bewitched by that dancer. How could he possibly care about a family gathering?"

Just then, Old Madam Ji had come downstairs and overheard. She gave Madam Ji a stern scolding and forbade her from speaking about Wen Shuang that way.

Soon after, the old lady found out about the whole affair. She had wanted to come to the hospital last night, but his father kept insisting it was too late and held her back. That was the only reason Old Madam Ji had suppressed her urge until now before finally being able to leave the house.

She held Wen Shuang in her arms, heartbroken. "My poor Shuangshuang, how could something like this have happened to you? You must have been suffering so much these past few days! Ah Shen, who did this to Shuangshuang? Have you found out?"

Ji Shen's voice was low and dark. "They've already been sentenced and locked up in prison."

Old Madam Ji fumed. "Which damned wretch was it?"

"The youngest daughter of the Xia family, Xia Anran. She's Shuangshuang's rival in the dance troupe. Because the troupe was about to give the principal position to Shuangshuang this month, she couldn't stand it, so she hired someone to ambush her."

Even as Ji Shen spoke of that woman, his face was cold as ice.

After hearing the whole story, Old Madam Ji was furious. She even wanted to go to the Xia family to settle accounts and demand to know how they'd raised their daughter!

Wen Shuang quickly grabbed her hand. "Grandmother, please don't be angry! Shen-ge has already given them a fierce dressing-down, and my best friend helped me get my revenge—what needed to be done has been done. At your age, you shouldn't be getting upset over people like them!"

"Oh, my Shuangshuang is such a good girl, even thinking about my health." The more Old Madam Ji looked at the girl, the more her heart ached for her. "Don't you worry. Since you're the granddaughter-in-law I've chosen, I will see justice done for you. Just wait—I'll have the Ji family cut off every single business tie with the Xia family, and we will never cooperate with them again!"

Wen Shuang was deeply moved.

She had been afraid that after breaking her leg, she might have fallen in the old lady's estimation. Never did she expect her grandmother to love her just as much as before, without the slightest change!

Old Madam Ji worried she might be troubled by her injury and overthink things, so she held her hand and comforted her for quite a while.

She also repeatedly instructed Ji Shen to take good care of Wen Shuang and never to bully her.

Ji Shen naturally swore a thousand promises.

But Old Madam Ji still felt the current hospital room wasn't good enough. In an instant, she arranged for Wen Shuang to be moved to the most luxurious, top-tier private suite, with one-on-one service for everything. The entire room was as lavish as a sprawling penthouse.

Wen Shuang felt overwhelmed by such favor.

Old Madam Ji smiled gently. "The granddaughter-in-law of the Ji family deserves nothing but the best! Tend to your recovery, my dear. Grandmother will come see you again in a few days."

Grandmother doted on Wen Shuang so much, calling her "granddaughter-in-law" over and over—Wen Shuang felt she could lose herself entirely in such warmth. Ji Shen had never denied it, but neither had he ever confirmed it.

Wen Shuang couldn't quite read his feelings.

But the man was nothing short of indulgent with her—anything she wanted, he gave without hesitation. Ever since she'd been hospitalized, he had stayed by her side without leaving for a single moment.

In the afternoon, Wen Shuang woke from a nap and opened her eyes—only to see Madam Ning standing there.

"Auntie!" Her eyes lit up, and she hurriedly tried to sit up.

Ning Su gently pressed her back down, her eyes rimmed with red, looking as though she had been crying. "Shuangshuang, don't move. The doctor said you need to rest quietly."

"Auntie, why didn't you wake me when you arrived?"

News of the Xia family's young miss running someone down and sending them to the hospital was spreading like wildfire through high society. When Ning Su first heard about it, she hadn't thought much of it. But when she later heard that the victim was a dancer, she immediately went to inquire—and discovered it was Wen Shuang!

She had rushed to the hospital.

There she saw Wen Shuang's legs bound in plaster, looking fragile in her sleep. Ning Su had once watched Wen Shuang shine so brilliantly on stage; now, seeing her lying in bed, unable to stand, she felt as though her own daughter were lying in that hospital bed. The grief was overwhelming, and she had secretly wept for a while.

"You were sleeping so soundly, so I didn't want to disturb you."

Ning Su asked softly whether she was feeling any better.

Wen Shuang said the surgery would be in two weeks—and if it succeeded, she would be able to dance again!

Ning Su looked at the determined smile on her face, as if she were seeing her own younger self.

"Shuangshuang, you will get better. I know you will!"

When Ji Shen came by, he ran into Ning Su as well.

After a brief moment of surprise, he greeted her politely.

Ning Su inclined her head in acknowledgment.

Ji Shen noticed the red rims of her eyes as she left.

He was somewhat taken aback. He hadn't expected Ning Su to shed tears over Wen Shuang's condition.

He walked in. Wen Shuang had clearly been moved to tears just moments before as well.

"Auntie Ning was here just now."

"I saw her when I came in." Ji Shen draped a jacket over her shoulders.

Wen Shuang's heart was a tangle of complicated emotions—and gratitude.

When she had first woken up, lying in a hospital bed and unable to stand, in that instant she had truly wanted to jump out of a window. But Ji Shen had stood up for her; Tang Yan had defended her by her side; Wen Fanhai had held her hand and said that no matter what, she still had her father.

Old Madam Ji had called her the finest granddaughter-in-law of the Ji family, and Ning Su had come with those red, teary eyes.

Every single one of these things had touched Wen Shuang deeply.

She thought to herself—no matter whether this surgery succeeded or failed, if only for the hopes of all these people, she was determined to live on and live well!

She would never disappoint those who loved her, and she would never let those who hated her see her fail and gloat behind her back.

These past few days, Qin You and Wen Yao had been entangled together day and night, without pause. Whenever the urge struck him—wherever he happened to be—he only needed to make one phone call to Wen Yao, and she would come running immediately. She was at his beck and call, always.

Today, however, Wen Yao was late.

Lately, she had felt distinctly unwell in her stomach; everything she ate made her want to throw up. Counting the days, she realized her period was already two weeks late!

Wen Yao began to panic. She bought a pregnancy test from the pharmacy, and when she tried it, the result showed two lines—she was pregnant!

But she had no idea whose child it was!

During this time, while she'd been tangled up with Qin You, she had never cut ties with that rich heir, either. Whenever Qin You was at work during the day, she would be off messing around with the other man.

Neither of the two men liked wearing a condom—they both felt it was too restrictive—and went at it bare. Wen Yao had always been in the habit of taking birth control pills, but last time, both encounters had been too intense, and they'd even happened on the same day. She'd thought she would take them together... and then she'd forgotten...

For a moment, Wen Yao felt dazed.

Qin You traced his hand down her back. "What's wrong today? You're not focused at all."
