Chapter 163: Ji Shen Desires to Win Back Wen Shuang
After Tang Yan finished confronting Ji Shen, she entered the hospital room and saw Bai Yan energetically staring at Wen Shuang. She couldn’t help but laugh. “Bai Yan, you’re recovering pretty fast! You were barely alive in bed before, scaring us all. But now, you look so energetic, you could probably get up and go clubbing.”
Bai Yan gazed tenderly at Wen Shuang. “That’s all thanks to Sister Shuang taking good care of me. If someone else had been looking after me, I definitely wouldn’t have recovered this quickly.”
Wen Shuang was speechless.
“Sounds like I’m some kind of miraculous doctor,” she joked.
“Haha, no wonder when I ran into Officer Ji earlier, he came out with such a fierce look, you’d think there was a fugitive hiding in the ward.”
Tang Yan chuckled at the image. “You must have stirred up trouble again, you brat!”
“I didn’t! Officer Ji always looks like I owe him eight million whenever he sees me,” Bai Yan said, glancing at Wen Shuang. “He kept scolding me just now. If it weren’t for Sister Shuang being there, I think he would have punched me. And I’m still a patient!”
Tang Yan laughed heartily. “Officer Ji must regret it now! Shuang Shuang, you better watch out.”
Wen Shuang said firmly, “I won’t go back.”
After how Ji Shen treated her, she had no desire to return and suffer again.
Bai Yan chimed in, “Exactly! Sister Shuang, you should just consider me from now on. I promise I can give you an unparalleled love story. Really, just give me a chance and you’ll see.”
Tang Yan teased, “Cut it out with the self-promotion. But since you took a hit for Sister Shuang this time, I’ll reluctantly keep an eye on you.”
Bai Yan brightened. “Sister Shuang, a chance?”
Wen Shuang wasn’t in the mood for their banter. She glanced at the time, grabbed her bag, and stood up. “Enough chatter. We’ll talk after your wounds heal. I’m off to work.”
Tang Yan stayed in the ward waiting for He Zhi.
Bai Yan showed two faces—sweet and gentle when Wen Shuang was around, but as soon as she turned cold, he lay expressionless on the bed playing games.
Tang Yan raised her brow. “You’ve got two faces.”
Bai Yan lazily replied, “My best side is only for Sister Shuang.”
“You better treat my Shuang Shuang well, or else I’ll skin you alive!”
“Of course, of course.”
After sitting for over half an hour, He Zhi still hadn’t arrived.
He had said he’d be there soon, but no sign of him yet.
Tang Yan called him; the phone showed no answer.
Immediately, she got up. Since that incident, her need to control He Zhi had grown stronger. She made him report everything he was doing every day; otherwise, she never felt at ease.
She waited a while longer.
Bai Yan noticed her restlessness. “Maybe He Zhi’s busy. Wait a little more?”
“With his playboy style, busy where exactly?”
Tang Yan flung open the ward door and as she headed downstairs, she spotted He Zhi not far away.
---
“Why are you just arriving? Where have you been? I called you so many times and you never answered!”
Tang Yan demanded.
He Zhi hesitated briefly, then composed himself. “There was a traffic jam earlier, and my phone was on silent. Sorry, Yan Yan.”
“What kind of traffic jam lasts that long? It’s not even rush hour!”
He Zhi explained, “Two cars collided up ahead, causing a traffic incident, so it was blocked for quite a while.”
Tang Yan narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “Didn’t I tell you not to put your phone on silent? Why don’t you listen?”
“Yan Yan, I’ve been sleeping poorly lately. Every time my phone rings, I wake up—you know that. I turned off silent before bed last night but forgot to turn it back on today. See, I’m here now.”
“Fine, but no more of this next time!”
Though she said it, her heart still felt uneasy.
Yet love blinded her, making her repeatedly tell herself to trust He Zhi.
---
Lately, Wen Shuang’s life was a monotonous routine—dance troupe, hospital, home—back and forth.
Thankfully, there weren’t many dance tour performances recently, so she could manage.
That night, after the curtain call, she was exhausted from the nonstop pace. Planning to go home, soak in a bath, and sleep.
She had to visit the hospital early the next morning to bring food to Bai Yan. Until he fully recovered, she couldn’t shake the heavy feeling in her heart.
As she stepped outside, she noticed a Hongqi L5 car.
She thought she had mistaken it until she saw the license plate. Wen Shuang’s expression stiffened slightly, but she decided to pretend she hadn’t seen it and walked past.
The man opened the car door and stepped out.
“Wen Shuang!”
Ji Shen hadn’t been to the dance troupe for quite some time.
He thought he wouldn’t come back, but after work, he couldn’t help but drive here.
Seeing Bai Yan and Wen Shuang so close at the hospital last time had left him feeling uneasy.
A strong impulse urged him to win her back.
“Is there something you need, Officer Ji?”
This was their first private meeting since the breakup.
Wen Shuang thought how quickly time had passed.
The man seemed changed—softer.
Yet also unchanged—the domineering and overbearing nature still deep in his bones.
“Just passing by, so I came to see you,” Ji Shen said with deep eyes.
The police station and theater weren’t exactly on the way; this was a clumsy excuse.
Under the night sky, he stood by the black car, wearing a long black coat, handsome and upright. The audience and performers who came out were all drawn to his presence.
“I’m not worth looking at,” Wen Shuang said indifferently. “Officer Ji, if there’s nothing else, I’m going home.”
“I’ll take you.”
“No need, I’ll call a cab.”
Wen Shuang didn’t want any more contact with Ji Shen.
She had tried before, but the pain was too much, and she didn’t want to feel it again.
Ji Shen was insistent. “Wen Shuang, I’ve come this far. You owe me some face.”
“Your face isn’t worth anything.”
Ji Shen was speechless.
It was the first time someone had told him that to his face.
After a moment’s silence, he said, “Maybe it’s worth little, but I’m offering to take you purely for your safety, Miss Wen.”
Wen Shuang didn’t want to argue at the theater entrance; she was worried about what rumors might spread afterward.
Reluctantly, she got into Ji Shen’s car.
The familiar interior and feeling were the same.
But her mood was different.
She noticed the little rabbit ornament she had hung on the car’s front—he hadn’t thrown it away and it still dangled there.
She took it down.
The man immediately said, “What are you doing?”
“Why are you still keeping this? I want to throw it away. It’s unnecessary and doesn’t suit your car, Officer Ji.”
“I like it. I don’t want to throw it away. Give it back to me.”
Ji Shen said this while driving.
“These are things from the past. Honestly, you never really liked it at first; you just got used to having it there. It’s good to get rid of it,” Wen Shuang said as she took it.
Suddenly, Ji Shen slammed on the brakes, causing Wen Shuang to jolt.
The man leaned close, his narrow eyes locking with hers.
“But now I like it. Miss Wen, please respect my feelings!”
