Chapter 84: There Is No Other Mr. Lin in Luocheng
The Dou father and son, through their earnest performance and sincere apologies, managed to escape the jaws of death and barely kept their lives. Now, only the Wang father and son remained.
Wang Shenglan kept tugging at Wang Jiaqian’s sleeve, hinting that perhaps he should put on a show as well. After all, last night he had slapped himself and licked the soles of his shoes; a kneeling apology seemed hardly more difficult.
Wang Jiaqian brushed Wang Shenglan’s hand aside. Though fear gnawed at him, who was he? The vice president of the Grand Prosperity Chamber of Commerce, worth billions, a prominent figure in Luo City—how could he trample upon his own dignity?
“We admit defeat today, but if you expect us to kneel and apologize like that dog, it’s absolutely impossible,” Wang Jiaqian declared defiantly.
“Oh… You do have some backbone,” Lin Yang sneered.
Wang Jiaqian pressed on, “Let us leave, and henceforth we will stay out of each other’s way. I won’t pursue the matter of my son’s humiliation, how about it?”
“No deal! Killing the two of you would be far simpler,” Lin Yang stepped forward, causing the father and son to retreat in panic.
“If you kill me, you’ll make an enemy of the entire Grand Prosperity Chamber, and the Murong family as well! Besides, you’ve already killed Ding Tai, offending the Sea Sky Gang. If you cross both the Murongs and the Sea Sky Gang, you’ll have no place in Luo City—you’ll die for sure.
Let me go, and I’ll settle Ding Tai’s death. The Sea Sky Gang won’t come after you. Isn’t that a win-win?” Wang Jiaqian’s negotiation skills were indeed sharp—worthy of a vice president.
“You’re trying to intimidate me with the Murong family and the Sea Sky Gang? That’s a clever move. But this is my game; I make the rules. No matter how clever your moves, they’re futile,” Lin Yang’s gaze was icy. Then he said, “Miss Murong, since these two are waving the Murong banner, you should decide their fate.”
Wang Jiaqian, hearing Lin Yang address someone as Miss Murong, looked around in confusion.
“Are you trying to scare me? You know Miss Murong?” Wang Jiaqian asked.
At that moment, Murong Yun’s voice sounded from the house.
“Wang Jiaqian, you’re bold indeed! Bringing people to Mr. Lin’s home to stir trouble, using the Murong name—who gave you the courage?” Murong Yun strode out as she spoke.
Seeing Murong Yun emerge from Lin Yang’s home, Wang Jiaqian and Wang Shenglan were utterly dumbfounded.
“Yun… President Yun! Why are you here?”
“If I weren’t here, I’d have missed this fine spectacle—and your outrageous behavior!” Murong Yun’s presence was commanding, intimidating Wang Jiaqian, who broke out in a cold sweat.
“President Yun… It’s not my fault! This young man assaulted and humiliated my son last night, as a father, how could I stand by?” Wang Jiaqian tried desperately to explain.
“Enough! No one knows Mr. Lin better than I do. With his status, he’d never stoop to strike your son without cause. If you failed to raise your son properly, you can’t blame others for doing it for you,” Murong Yun’s rebuke left Wang Jiaqian speechless.
“Even if Mr. Lin humiliated your son, so what? You simply have to accept it!”
“Now you’ve come seeking revenge and failed—this is your own fault. Yet you dare invoke the Murong name. Do you realize Mr. Lin is a benefactor of the Murong family?”
At her words, Wang Jiaqian and Wang Shenglan suddenly remembered the mysterious Mr. Lin who had saved Director Cao at Murong Zhang’s birthday banquet days ago.
“He’s the renowned Dr. Lin who saved Director Cao?” Wang Jiaqian asked in a trembling voice.
“There’s only one Mr. Lin in Luo City!” Murong Yun said coldly.
Wang Jiaqian could no longer maintain his composure. It was as if all strength had drained from him; he collapsed to the floor, as grief-stricken as one who had lost everything.
Wang Shenglan, meanwhile, prostrated himself, shaking uncontrollably.
Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined that the person he had offended was the very Lin everyone sought to befriend.
Wang Jiaqian hurriedly turned over, kowtowing repeatedly, begging for mercy.
“Mr. Lin, I was wrong. I failed to recognize greatness—I didn’t know you were the illustrious Mr. Lin. If I had, no amount of courage would have brought me here.”
After this, his eyes flicked toward Wang Shenglan, and he immediately began beating his son with fists and kicks.
“You foolish child, blind to greatness! How dare you offend Mr. Lin? I’ll beat you to death!”
Wang Shenglan screamed under the assault. His swollen face received over a dozen more slaps, blood streaming from nose and mouth. He lay limp on the ground, as lifeless as a puddle of mud.
“Mr. Lin, all this trouble was caused by my rebellious son! Please trust that I would never show you the slightest disrespect. This unfilial child is yours to deal with as you wish. I only beg you to temper your wrath and spare me.”
Wang Jiaqian was ruthless, sacrificing his own son to save himself. If he died, the Wang family would be finished.
A son—he had more than one. The Wang family could not fall.
“A tiger will not eat its own cubs! For the sake of your own survival and wealth, you’re willing to abandon your son’s life. Someone like you isn’t even worthy of dying at my hands,” Lin Yang said, then turned and walked back into the house.
Wang Jiaqian felt a flicker of relief; his life, at least, was spared.
“Wang Jiaqian, from today you are no longer vice president of the Grand Prosperity Chamber. Your membership is revoked—get out! And clean up the corpse outside,” Murong Yun commanded with her characteristic decisiveness. Lin Yang scorned killing, but she had to deal with Wang Jiaqian herself.
Wang Jiaqian knew Murong Yun never went back on her word. He didn’t bother with futile pleas.
“Thank you, President Yun, for sparing my life.”
After bowing in gratitude, he dragged Wang Shenglan away.
“Boss Wang, how should we handle the body?” asked his driver.
“Put it in the trunk for now; it might still be useful,” Wang Jiaqian replied, casting a resentful glance at Lin Yang’s villa.
To lose his position as vice president and his membership meant he was now blacklisted by the Murong family.
Wang Jiaqian knew two paths lay ahead: sell everything and leave Luo City to start anew, or pledge allegiance to another power.
The best choice would be to join the Hongxing Chamber of Commerce, Grand Prosperity’s fiercest rival, and seek out Chen Tianhao.
Of course, this was risky—he’d be seen as a traitor. If it failed, his family would be destroyed.
Though hatred seethed in his heart, he had not yet decided his final course.
Inside, Murong Yun entered and said, “Mr. Lin, I’m sorry for causing you trouble.”
“It has nothing to do with you,” Lin Yang waved her off.
“I’ll arrange for the yard to be repaired. And since a master’s direct disciple has died, I’ll negotiate with Master Jiang to prevent anyone from exploiting the situation and inflaming greater conflict.”
Murong Yun was wary that Wang Jiaqian might try to incite the Sea Sky Gang, sowing discord and playing a deadly game of manipulation.
